What the 29 months look like

You join the DDS class in the second semester of its second year, which covers preclinical general dentistry lectures and labs. A course built for Advanced Standing students then moves you into the third- and fourth-year clinical and didactic courses.13

Spring, year 1Second-year, second-semester preclinical courses, 21 credits
Summer to springThird-year clinical and didactic courses
Final yearFourth-year clinic and courses, graduation usually in May

The catalog lists 97 credit hours in all.4 Graduates can apply for US licensure; UNMC notes that some return to their home countries with their new skills.3

What UNMC focuses on, and what that means for you

These points come from UNMC’s program page, admissions page and CAAPID profile. The advice under them is ours.

Small

A very small, mentored classFour to six students, with small classes and personalised mentoring named as program features. UNMC describes a supportive, collaborative learning community.13

Tech

Simulation and digital dentistryA clinical and virtual simulation lab with virtual reality trainers, and a digital design studio with CAD/CAM, 3D printers and milling machines.1

Serve

Outreach and private-practice settingsCommunity outreach for underserved people, and more than 30 extramural practice sites, including private practice.1

Lead

Research and leadershipStudent-led research presented at national meetings, and leadership of a student organization.1

English

A strict English standardTOEFL iBT 100, required even of US citizens, from a test taken after October 1, 2024.2 This is higher than many Advanced Standing programs ask.

Hands

An interview and bench test togetherNo one is accepted without an interview, and the interview includes a manikin-based psychomotor skills test. You cannot request an interview; the committee decides.2

Our advice for your CAAPID essays and interview

  • Show you will be a good member of a class of five. Write about teamwork, how you take feedback and how you help colleagues, not only about your own achievements.
  • If you have used digital workflows (intraoral scanning, CAD/CAM, 3D printing) or taken part in research, describe what you did. UNMC lists both as part of how its students learn.
  • Give outreach real detail: who you served, where and for how long. Pick letter writers (one faculty member, two mentors or employers) who can speak to your conduct and professional ability.
  • Take the TOEFL early. A 100 is the gate; a 98 means a year’s wait.

Prepare for the bench test before the invitation arrivesUNMC sends the bench test protocol only after your interview is confirmed, which leaves little time. Build your skills on the common preparations first. Read what the dental bench test is, how schools evaluate it and the bench exercises reported by school. The Study Boards bench course with Dr. Kaur covers these preparations one by one.

How you pay for it

Advanced Standing usually costs roughly $250,000 to $450,000 all-in, and UNMC sits in the middle of that range. Almost everyone finances it with loans, so do not let the number stop you.

UNMC says US citizens may apply for financial aid through studentaid.gov, and the College of Dentistry offers no scholarships of its own.2 Green-card holders are also eligible for federal student aid.6 Across the US, the other common routes are private loans, co-signer loans with a US citizen or green-card holder, and a few international lenders that need no co-signer. Plan without a salary: UNMC does not allow students to work while enrolled.2

Other routes if UNMC is not the right fit

Four to six places a year is very few, so apply to several programs.

DDS/DMD

Advanced Standing elsewhereOther US schools run 2 to 3 year programs to a DDS or DMD, mostly through ADEA CAAPID. Compare them in our full list of US dental schools and the Advanced Standing programs guide.

AEGD

AEGD programsSome states give a limited licence after an AEGD; the rules vary by state. You apply through ADEA PASS. See AEGD programs for international dentists.

PASS

Residency directlySpecialty residencies through ADEA PASS. This is more competitive for internationally trained dentists. Read CAAPID or PASS.

Teach

TeachingSome dentists start in teaching and research roles at dental schools while they plan their next step.

If you are also weighing Canada, the AFK route through the NDEB is the first exam there, and much of your INBDE study carries over.

Yes, if you are a US citizen or permanent resident. You need a BDS (or equivalent) from outside the US and Canada, a passing INBDE or NBDE Parts I and II, TOEFL iBT 100 and an ECE or WES evaluation. UNMC does not sponsor student visas, so you cannot apply from India on an F-1.

Yes. Every applicant must pass the INBDE or NBDE Parts I and II, whatever the country of training. You also need TOEFL iBT 100, even if you studied in English.
Is there a bench test for UNMC Advanced Standing?
Yes. Invited candidates do an on-site interview that includes a manikin-based psychomotor skills test. UNMC sends the details after you confirm your interview. The $500 interview fee covers it.
How much does UNMC’s Advanced Standing program cost?
