UNC ASPID: The Advanced Standing Program for International Dentists at UNC Chapel Hill (2026 Guide)
The UNC Adams School of Dentistry runs the Advanced Standing Program for International Dentists (ASPID), a 29-month program that ends with a US DDS degree, with only 8 places a year. You apply through ADEA CAAPID; the 2026 deadline was May 23, 2026 for a January 2, 2027 start, and selection includes an in-person interview and a bench test in Chapel Hill.12
Who this guide is for: Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi and Nepali dentists (BDS), and other internationally trained dentists aiming for a US DDS or DMD through the INBDE and CAAPID.
How The Study Boards helps you get into UNC
- INBDE: UNC needs a pass on the INBDE (or NBDE Parts I and II) before you apply, and score reports cannot come after the deadline. The Study Boards INBDE course gives you faculty-written Modules and Master Files, 35,000+ questions, the Master and Grand Test Series and nightly live tests at 9 PM New York time, with a 99% first-attempt pass rate for students who complete the course.
- Personalised to you: our courses are extremely personalised. The course learns from the way you study, red lines and assignments are given to you on the go, and faculty assist you whenever you are stuck.
- TOEFL: UNC wants a total of 100 (5 on the new scale) with 20 or more in each section, and will not review a file under 90. Our TOEFL course for dentists trains every section.
- Your CAAPID file: our CAAPID application program builds your personal statement and CV with you, guides your letters, and helps you pick a realistic school list.
- Bench test: UNC runs a traditional bench test on manikins on interview day. Our bench test preparation with Dr. Kaur critiques your own preparations first.
- Interview: UNC calls the interview very important and asks re-applicants whether they answered the question or recited a prepared answer. Interview preparation with Dr. T trains you to answer what is asked.

How the 29 months run
You start in January with six months of intensive didactic, preclinical and laboratory courses, then join the third-year DDS class in the fall of the same year.2 From there you train in UNC’s clinic model, which mirrors real practices led by faculty preceptors, with rotations that include service in underserved North Carolina communities.4
What UNC focuses on
UNC’s FAQ is unusually frank about what earns an interview and an offer. These points come from it and from UNC’s curriculum page.
The initial reviewTOEFL scores, previous grades with the GPA ECE calculates, your personal statement, and your experiences in your new country and your home country decide who is invited.1
Letters carry real weightLetters from your dean, faculty, employers and dentists you have shadowed play a crucial role. UNC wants one from a dentist practising in the United States.1
US specialty training may helpSpecialty training from your home country does not automatically raise your chances; US specialty training might.1
Honest, real answersThe interview is very important and mandatory. UNC asks re-applicants whether they answered the interviewer’s questions or just said what they had prepared.1
A traditional bench testA bench test on manikins in the preclinical lab, on the same day as the interview.1
Advocates for health equityThe ACT curriculum trains dentists to be advocates for health equity, with a service rotation in underserved North Carolina communities.4
So in your CAAPID essays and interview, show this
- What you have done since you came to the US: shadowing, assisting, research, volunteering. UNC reviews your experience in your new country, not only at home.
- A US dentist who has seen you work and can write your second letter. Start shadowing early enough for that relationship to form.
- A personal statement that sounds like you. UNC asks re-applicants whether theirs made them look like every other applicant.
- Answers that respond to the actual question. Practise with someone who changes the questions, so you cannot recite.
- Care for underserved patients, if you have done it. UNC’s curriculum is built around advocacy and health equity.
- A neat, carefully checked application. UNC says neatness and detail matter in a profession like dentistry.
This is our advice, built on what the school publishes above. The school does not publish a scoring rubric.
Requirements in detail
UNC does not accept late or incomplete files, and nothing can be added after the deadline.1

Cost and financing
UNC publishes a tuition rate; its FAQ says the full financial details are given on interview day.13
UNC says its cost is about the same as similar programs across the country. Rates change each year, so ask for the full budget on interview day. Before you are accepted, budget for the INBDE ($1,325), the CAAPID fee ($264 for your first program, $115 for each extra one), your ECE report, the $150 UNC fee, your TOEFL and the trip to Chapel Hill.651
How international dentists pay for it
Advanced Standing usually costs roughly $250,000 to $450,000 all-in. Almost everyone finances it with loans, so do not let the number stop you.
UNC’s FAQ says student loans are available only if you are eligible for federal student loans, and you apply once you have started. Federal loans are generally for US citizens and permanent residents, so most international students look at private options instead.
Across the US, the common routes are private education loans, co-signer loans with a US citizen or green-card holder, and a few international lenders that need no co-signer. Read is becoming a US dentist worth it and the cost to apply to US dental schools for the full picture.

Other routes if UNC is not the right fit
Eight places a year makes UNC one of the smallest programs, so apply to several schools.
Advanced Standing elsewhereOther US schools run 2 to 3 year Advanced Standing programs to a DDS or DMD, mostly through ADEA CAAPID. Compare them in our full list of US dental schools and the Advanced Standing programs guide.
AEGD programsSome states give a limited licence after an AEGD; the rules vary by state. You apply through ADEA PASS. See AEGD programs for international dentists.
Residency directlySpecialty residencies through ADEA PASS. This is more competitive for internationally trained dentists. Read CAAPID or PASS to choose.
TeachingSome dentists start in teaching and research roles at dental schools while they plan their next step.
If you are also weighing Canada, the NDEB AFK route is the first exam on that path, and many of our students prepare for the INBDE and the AFK together.
