UMKC Dental School for International Dentists: The Advanced Standing DDS Program (2026 Guide)
The University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) School of Dentistry runs a 29-month Advanced Standing program that takes nine internationally trained dentists a year into its DDS class, and it is open only to US citizens and permanent residents. You apply through ADEA CAAPID; the last window closed on June 1, 2026, for a January 18, 2027 start, and you need a passing INBDE (or NBDE Parts I and II) before you apply.
Who this guide is for: Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi and Nepali dentists (BDS), and other internationally trained dentists, who hold a US green card or citizenship and are aiming for a US DDS or DMD through the INBDE and ADEA CAAPID.
How The Study Boards helps you get into UMKC
- INBDE first: every student in UMKC’s 2024 cohort had passed the INBDE. Our INBDE Premium Boards course gives you 35,000+ questions, faculty-written Modules and Master Files, full test series, nightly live tests at 9 PM New York time, and a 99% first-attempt pass rate for students who complete the course.
- Personalised to you: the course is extremely personalised. It learns from the way you study, red lines and assignments are given to you on the go, and faculty are there to assist you.
- Bench exam with Dr. Kaur: UMKC tests your hands in person at the end of July. Our bench test preparation with Dr. Kaur gets your preparations ready for faculty eyes.
- Interview with Dr. T: one-on-one interview preparation with Dr. T for UMKC’s in-person faculty interview.
- File and English: our CAAPID application program builds your essays and school list, and our TOEFL course gets you past 90.
UMKC Advanced Standing at a glance
From UMKC’s own pages and the ADEA CAAPID listing, checked in October 2026.
What the 29 months look like
You start in January with a full semester of orientation and review: didactic courses, laboratory work and patient care. If you complete it, you join the third-year DDS class in the summer semester and finish the third and fourth years with them.1
What UMKC focuses on, and what that means for you
These points come from UMKC’s own admission list, its mission and its published cohort profile. The advice under them is ours.
Grades count, and the bar is publishedUMKC sets a minimum dental GPA of 3.0 and prefers 3.4.2 Its 2024 cohort averaged 3.72, and every student had passed the INBDE.1
Real time inside US dentistryUMKC asks for documented investigation of US dentistry through shadowing and work experience, and one of your three letters must come from a practising US dentist.1
Community service and characterThe admission list names community service and volunteering, strong character and interpersonal communication skills.1 Compassion, “taking a genuine interest in the needs of those we serve”, is one of the school’s stated values.4
A hands-on, in-person assessmentThe selection visit runs over several days: instrument check-out, procedural lectures, practice time, an interview and a skills bench exam.1 UMKC does not publish the exact preparations, so prepare for the common bench tasks.
Who got in last timeUMKC’s 2024 cohort trained in Cuba, India, Pakistan, the UAE, Venezuela and Nepal, and lived in seven US states, from California to New Jersey.1
Residency, not visasOnly US citizens and permanent residents can apply. If you are in the US on a visa, you are not eligible.1
- Lead with your grades if they are strong. If your GPA is close to 3.0, show steady growth since: a clean INBDE pass, recent coursework, clinical work.
- Write about specific US clinical hours: where you shadowed or worked, what you saw, and what changed in how you think about US patient care. Ask that dentist for your letter.
- Show service with numbers and names: which community, how many hours, what you did. UMKC lists it as a requirement, not a bonus.
- Treat the July visit as a working week. Practise speaking clearly about your cases while your hands are busy, because the interview and bench exam sit side by side.
Requirements in detail
Every item below must be in place by the CAAPID deadline. Missing one usually means waiting a full year.
Selection steps and the application timeline
This is how UMKC’s 2026 cycle ran. The school says its CAAPID window runs from early March to June 1 of the year before you start. Next cycle’s dates are not posted yet.

Cost and financing

How you pay for it
Advanced Standing usually costs roughly $250,000 to $450,000 all-in, and almost everyone finances it with loans. Do not let the number stop you.
Because UMKC takes only US citizens and permanent residents, you are in a stronger position than most international applicants: green-card holders are eligible for US federal student aid, which F-1 students are not.5 Across the US, the other common routes are private loans, co-signer loans with a US citizen or green-card holder, and a few international lenders that need no co-signer. UMKC’s financial aid office can give you the current cost of attendance.

Other routes if UMKC is not the right fit
Nine places a year, and only for green-card holders and citizens, so most dentists apply more widely.
Advanced Standing elsewhereOther US schools run 2 to 3 year programs to a DDS or DMD, mostly through ADEA CAAPID, and some accept F-1 visa students. Compare them in our full list of US dental schools and the Advanced Standing programs guide.
AEGD programsSome states give a limited licence after an AEGD; the rules vary by state. You apply through ADEA PASS. See AEGD programs for international dentists.
Residency directlySpecialty residencies through ADEA PASS. This is more competitive for internationally trained dentists. Read CAAPID or PASS.
TeachingSome dentists start in teaching and research roles at dental schools while they plan their next step.
If you are also weighing Canada, the AFK route through the NDEB is the first exam there, and much of your INBDE study carries over.
