What Rutgers focuses on

Each card gives the fact from Rutgers’ own pages, then our advice on what to do with it.

Clinical excellence, cultural competence, evidenceRutgers says the program emphasises clinical excellence, cultural competence and evidence-based care, and prepares graduates to serve diverse patient populations and advance health equity.2Our advice: in your CAAPID essay and interview, give one clinical case you are proud of, one example of treating patients from a different background, and one time you changed your treatment because of the evidence.
Stronger credentials winThere is no minimum GPA or TOEFL score, but Rutgers says that because the process is competitive, applicants with stronger credentials are preferred.3Our advice: “no minimum” is not “any score”. Push your TOEFL as high as you can; Rutgers counts your highest score.
No bench test, but hands still matterRutgers does not hold a bench test on interview day, but suggests a bench preparatory course to sharpen your technical and clinical skills.3Our advice: a hands-on bench course on your CV answers this directly, and you will need it for other schools on your list.
The interview decidesNo candidate is accepted without an interview, and interviews cannot be requested.1Our advice: prepare as if the interview is the whole decision. It is the only part of the process where Rutgers meets you.
Early files have the edgeRutgers practises rolling admissions and strongly recommends applying as early in the cycle as possible.3Our advice: aim to submit in March or April. That means your INBDE should be passed by early 2027.
Open to everyoneThe program is open to US citizens, permanent residents and international students. You do not need to live in New Jersey.13Our advice: explain why Newark and Rutgers specifically, not just why the US.

How international dentists pay for it

Advanced Standing usually costs roughly $250,000 to $450,000 all-in, and Rutgers sits in the middle of that range. Almost everyone finances it with loans, so plan for it rather than fear it.

Rutgers’ program pages do not describe financial aid for international students. What they do say is that every International Dentist Program student pays each academic year’s tuition and fees in full, 30 days before it starts, after a $5,000 deposit.1 Across the US, the common routes are private loans, co-signer loans with a US citizen or green-card holder, and a few international lenders that need no co-signer. Read is becoming a US dentist worth it for the full picture.
