What Pitt focuses on

Pitt’s FAQ is unusually frank about what it values. Each card gives the fact from Pitt’s own pages, then our advice.

English first: TOEFL 100Pitt requires 100 (5.0). Its FAQ says files below 100 are reviewed but are highly unlikely to get an interview, and that raising your TOEFL is the one score you can still improve.12Our advice: do not apply to Pitt with a 95 and hope. Get to 100 first, then apply.
Your whole file, not just the boardsBecause board results are only pass or fail, Pitt puts minimal emphasis on them. TOEFL, grades, your personal statement, experiences in your new and home country, and letters drive the interview list.2Our advice: make your personal statement specific to Pitt and say what you have done since arriving in the US, if you are here.
Writing and presentationInterview day has included a short writing test, because Pitt wants to see how foreign-trained dentists write. The FAQ also warns against messy statements, mixed fonts and statements naming the wrong school.2Our advice: proofread everything, and practise writing a clear paragraph under time.
Specific letters, non-negotiableTwo letters from a dean, associate dean, department chair or faculty member of your dental school, and one from a shadowing or work experience, preferably in the US.1Our advice: line up a US dentist to shadow or assist early, so the third letter is from someone who has watched you work here.
Clinical skill compared with Pitt’s own D3sThe bench test lets Pitt compare your skills with its regular third-year students. Examiners check infection control, that you cut the right tooth, and that you follow instructions.2Our advice: drill the three exact preparations Pitt names, with infection control as if on a patient.
Training and gradesA 3.0 ECE GPA or higher is preferred. Specialty training at home does not automatically help; US specialty training might help you get an interview.12Our advice: list your training, but sell your clinical readiness, not your titles.

What Pitt asks for

Requirements in detail

Everything goes through ADEA CAAPID. Pitt’s three letter types are non-negotiable.1

A dental degree from a non-CODA programPitt does not accept provisional diplomas. If your degree is four years, you must show proof of an internship, government service or a GPR after graduation.12
A passing INBDE resultPitt requires a pass on the INBDE, or NBDE Parts I and II, entered under Academic History in CAAPID. Results must arrive before the deadline.12 The INBDE costs $1,325 for internationally trained dentists as of October 2026.7 Start with our INBDE Premium Boards course and the INBDE and CAAPID timeline. The ADAT is preferred but not required.1
TOEFL iBT 100 (5.0)Internet-based and Home Edition both accepted. Scores must be under two years old at the deadline and sent to CAAPID. If you have studied in the US for more than three years, you can email Pitt to discuss a waiver.124 Our TOEFL course for dentists is built for this target.
ECE or WES, and your licencesBoth evaluations are accepted, though Pitt’s FAQ explains why it likes a standard ECE report. Upload licences under Supporting Information.12 See WES or ECE: which do you need.
Three letters, plus up to three moreTwo from your dental school’s dean, associate dean, chair or faculty; one from shadowing or work, preferably in the US. Up to three additional letters can go in CAAPID’s Documents section.1 Our letters of recommendation guide helps you plan.
$75 university fee and any legal visa statusYou may apply on any valid visa; invitees send a copy of their visa or proof of citizenship or residency.12

Selection steps and the application timeline

This is how the 2026 cycle ran. Pitt has not posted the next cycle’s dates yet.

June 19, 2026DeadlineThe committee reviews complete files one week later.24
2 to 3 weeks laterInterview invitationsInterviews can start three to four weeks after the deadline. You pay a nonrefundable bench test fee before the day.12

The bench test: a class II amalgam preparation on a lower premolar, a class III composite preparation on a maxillary anterior, and a PFM crown preparation on a maxillary first molar, in 2.5 hours with school-provided instruments. Three faculty score the preparations blind.12
About 3 weeks afterDecisionsNot rolling: Pitt fills the class after interviews and bench tests, with a waitlist. A nonrefundable tuition deposit secures your seat.12
By March 1Confirm you can start on timeVisa or travel problems must be reported by March 1, or your place may go to a waitlisted candidate already in the US.1
May 3, 2027Summer term, then D3Full attendance is required all summer.14

Interview day may be longPitt’s FAQ describes an all-day visit with a briefing, a student-led tour, a short writing test, a faculty interview, lunch with current students and the bench test. Our sum of Pitt’s three 2026-27 budgets. Pitt says all figures are estimates and change every year.

Before you are accepted, budget for the INBDE ($1,325), the CAAPID fee ($264 for your first program, $115 for each extra one), an ECE report ($199), Pitt’s $75 fee and the bench test fee, plus your TOEFL and travel.567 Our breakdown of what it costs to apply to US dental schools covers the rest.

How international dentists pay for it

Advanced Standing usually costs roughly $250,000 to $450,000 all-in, and Pitt is at the lower end of that range. Almost everyone finances it with loans, so plan rather than worry.

Know Pitt’s rules early. Pitt has no scholarships for Advanced Standing students, and says student loans through the school are available only to those eligible for US federal loans, meaning citizens and green-card holders. Accepted students also pay a nonrefundable tuition deposit and the summer tuition in advance.12 Across the US, the common routes for everyone else are private loans, co-signer loans with a US citizen or green-card holder, and a few international lenders that need no co-signer. Read is becoming a US dentist worth it for the full picture.

Five to ten places a year is very few, so plan to apply to several programs.

DDS/DMD

Advanced Standing elsewhereOther US schools run 2 to 3 year Advanced Standing programs to a DDS or DMD, mostly through ADEA CAAPID. Compare them in our full list of US dental schools and the Advanced Standing programs guide.

AEGD

AEGD programsSome states give a limited licence after an AEGD; the rules vary by state. You apply through ADEA PASS. See AEGD programs for international dentists.
