Career Options After BDS (2026): US, Canada and Other Paths

After a BDS you have four real choices: specialise at home with an MDS, build a private practice, join public service or move into public health and hospital administration, or retrain to practise abroad. For the US the licence route runs through the INBDE and a 2 to 3 year Advanced Standing DDS/DMD program; for Canada it runs through the NDEB Equivalency Process, starting with the AFK. Some dentists also enter first on a student visa (a US master’s on an F-1, or a Canadian program on a study permit). That route is financially exhausting, but it is a real pathway.

Who this guide is for: Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi and Nepali dentists with a BDS (Bachelor of Dental Surgery), Middle Eastern dentists with a BDS or an equivalent dental degree, and MDS holders asking whether to stay, specialise or move. If you hold a DDS or DMD from a CODA-accredited school, this is not your page.

How The Study Boards helps you after BDS

One team for the exams and the application, whichever country you choose

  • INBDE course: 35,000+ questions, faculty-written Modules, Master Files, test series and a nightly live test at 9 PM New York time. 99% first-attempt pass rate for students who complete the course.
  • Plans: $299 for 3 months, $499 for 6 months, $899 for 12 months, or $39 a month.
  • Canada: AFK and ADAT courses. Applications: the CAAPID application program, TOEFL, bench test prep with Dr. Kaur and interview prep with Dr. T.
  • Personal guidance: the course is extremely personalised. Red lines and assignments are given to you on the go, the course learns from how you study, and our faculty assist you. We run no live classes or lectures; the live part is the test.

Start with your goal

What do you actually want after BDS?

Pick the line that sounds most like you. Each answer points to the guide that goes deeper.

Choose an option above to see your route.
Specialise at home

An MDS takes three years after BDS and internship. In India the entry exam is NEET MDS. It makes you a specialist at home, but it does not count towards a US or Canadian licence. Compare both in MDS in India vs DDS in the USA, and see MDS alternatives for Indian dentists.

US licence

Pass the INBDE, get your degree evaluated, take the TOEFL, then apply through ADEA CAAPID to Advanced Standing programs. Graduate with a DDS or DMD and take a clinical licensing exam. Start with DDS in the USA for international dentists.

Canada licence

Apply to the NDEB, pass the AFK and ACJ, then either the NDECC, the BTDPC bridge program (citizens and permanent residents) or a degree-completion program. Start with how to become a dentist in Canada.

Visa first

A US master’s on an F-1, or a Canadian postgraduate program on a study permit, gets you into the country and often into work. It does not make you a licensed dentist. Read the honest numbers in the visa-first section below.

Fair to the options at home

Career options after BDS at home

Most dentists never leave, and many do very well. Here is each home option in one card. The rules below use India as the example; Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal work in a similar way with their own bodies.

MDS

Master of Dental SurgeryThree years in one specialty, such as orthodontics, prosthodontics or oral surgery.3 In India you enter through NEET MDS: 240 multiple-choice questions in 3 hours, held on 2 May in 2026, with an exam fee of Rs 3,500 for General, OBC and EWS candidates.2 Seats are limited and private seats are expensive.Best for: a specialist career at home

Clinic

Private practiceJoin a clinic as an associate, then open your own. Income depends on your city, your skills and your patients, and no official body publishes a national salary figure. Short courses in implants, aligners or endodontics help you stand out.Best for: control and steady growth

Govt

Public serviceDental surgeon posts through state public service commissions and health departments, teaching posts once you hold an MDS, and the Army Dental Corps, which also has its own MDS seats.2Best for: security and fixed hours

MPH

Public health and hospital administrationAn MPH or a hospital-management degree moves you into programs, research, insurance or hospital management. It is a strong career, and it is also the most common subject for dentists who later study abroad.Best for: non-clinical leadership

India now has a new regulatorOn 19 March 2026 the Government of India set up the National Dental Commission. It replaced the Dental Council of India, and one of its jobs is to frame fee guidelines for private dental colleges.1 Check the new body’s notices before you rely on older DCI rules.

The licence route

Career options after BDS in the USA

Every US licensing jurisdiction requires the INBDE.4 Licensing rules are set by each state, and most expect a degree from a CODA-accredited program. That is why most BDS holders go back to school through Advanced Standing.4 These are the four routes after the boards.

1

Advanced Standing (IDP) through CAAPIDA 2 to 3 year program that ends in a US DDS or DMD. You apply through ADEA CAAPID: $264 for the first program and $115 for each extra one in the 2026-27 cycle.5 Most programs want a passed INBDE, a credential evaluation, the TOEFL and often a bench test and interview. The main road to a full licence

2

AEGD through PASSAdvanced Education in General Dentistry. You apply through ADEA PASS: $199 for the first program and $92 for each extra one in 2026-27.6 Some states give a limited licence after it, and rules vary. See AEGD programs for international dentists.Clinical training, limited licence in some states

3

Residency through PASSSpecialty programs such as orthodontics, periodontics or dental public health. They are more competitive, and in most states finishing one does not satisfy the licence education rule on its own.4 See the CAAPID guide to every residency.Specialty training

4

TeachingSome dental schools hire foreign-trained dentists as faculty, and a few states issue a faculty or teaching licence. Rules differ by state and school.Check the state board

On cost, honestlyAdvanced Standing usually costs roughly $250,000 to $450,000 all-in, including living costs. Almost everyone finances it with loans: private loans, co-signer loans with a US citizen or green-card holder, and a few international lenders need no co-signer. It is a big number, and thousands of dentists before you have managed it. Read is becoming a US dentist worth it.

The pay at the end is strong. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the median dentist wage at $176,110 a year (May 2025), and the median for general dentists at $170,950.7 Not sure which route to take? Read CAAPID or PASS: how to pick the right path. Already working as a hygienist? See the hygienist route for foreign-trained dentists.

The NDEB route

Career options after BDS in Canada

If your dental program is not accredited in Canada, you go through the National Dental Examining Board (NDEB). There are three ways to reach the final certification exam.8

NDEB Equivalency Process: AFK, ACJ and NDECCThe Assessment of Fundamental Knowledge (AFK) is the first exam, then the Assessment of Clinical Judgement (ACJ), then the NDECC clinical exam. Fees from 1 July 2025: application $900, AFK $1,000, ACJ $1,350 and NDECC $6,500 (all CAD).9 Pass all three and you move on to the Certification Process, which includes the Virtual OSCE. Read our AFK exam guide.
BTDPC bridge program: a new shortcut past the NDECCThe Bridge Training to Dental Practice in Canada program runs at the University of Alberta, Dalhousie and Laval, takes about 8 months, and is open to Canadian citizens and permanent residents who have passed the AFK and ACJ.10 From 1 July 2026, graduates can apply to the Certification Process without the NDECC.11 See who qualifies for the bridge pathway.
Degree-completion or qualifying programsCanadian dental faculties run accredited qualifying and degree-completion programs for internationally trained dentists, and graduates can apply to the Certification Process. Seats are few, and admissions often look at the ADAT or AFK, so check each school.8 See Canadian degree-completion programs.

The honest version

Visa-first routes: enter on a student visa, license later

Many dentists mainly want a visa. They take a course that gets them an F-1 student visa (US) or a study permit (Canada), work after it, and attempt the licence exams along the way. These routes are financially exhausting, but they are a real pathway, and many people get a job afterwards.

USA: F-1 master’s, then OPT, then a work visa
  • Programs you can enter without a US licence: MPH, MHA and other public-health degrees, dental public health, MS in oral biology or another research MS, and some certificate programs.
  • Typical cost: the University of Florida’s campus MPH lists about $74,700 in tuition and fees for out-of-state and international students in 2026-27 (48 credits), before living costs.12 Private universities often cost more.
  • OPT: up to 12 months of work permission related to your degree. A further 24 months (STEM OPT) is only for degrees on the DHS STEM list, with an E-Verify employer.13 Epidemiology and biostatistics are on that list; “Public Health, General” is not.14 The CIP code on your I-20 decides it, so ask the school before you accept.
  • After OPT: an H-1B or another route. H-1B selection is now weighted towards higher-paid jobs (from the FY 2027 season), and a new $100,000 payment for some new petitions is being fought in court.1516
Canada: study permit, then PGWP, then permanent residence
  • Study permit: Canada plans up to 408,000 study permits in 2026, only 155,000 of them for new arrivals. Master’s and doctoral students at public institutions no longer need a provincial attestation letter from 1 January 2026.17
  • Typical cost: the University of Toronto’s MPH costs CA$53,060 a year in tuition for international students in 2026-27.18 You must also show CA$23,448 a year for living costs if you apply from 1 September 2026.19
  • Post-Graduation Work Permit: a master’s of at least 8 months can give a 3-year PGWP. Degree graduates need CLB 7 in English.20
  • Permanent residence: the Canadian Experience Class under Express Entry needs at least one year of skilled work in Canada in the last three years. Time worked while studying full-time does not count.21
What a student visa does not doIt does not make you a licensed dentist. Most people work first in research, public health or other non-clinical roles, or in dental-assisting or hygiene-adjacent jobs where the local rules allow. To practise dentistry you still need the INBDE and CAAPID route in the US, or the NDEB route in Canada. If you take this route, The Study Boards can prepare you for the INBDE or AFK alongside your studies. This is general information, not immigration advice: check specifics with the school’s international office or an immigration lawyer.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best career option after BDS?
There is no single best, and at The Study Boards we never push one route. An MDS is best if you want to specialise at home. Advanced Standing in the US gives the highest pay but costs the most. Canada’s NDEB route costs less in tuition but takes time. Pick by your goal, your budget and your family plans.
After BDS, which course is best for going abroad?
If you want to practise dentistry abroad, the “course” is the licence route: INBDE then Advanced Standing in the US, or the AFK and ACJ in Canada. If you mainly want to get abroad first, an MPH or a research MS gets you a student visa, but not a dental licence.
Can I practise in the USA with an Indian MDS?
Not on its own. In most states, advanced training does not meet the licence education rule if your first dental degree is from a non-accredited program. Most MDS holders still go through Advanced Standing. Some states give a limited licence after an AEGD or residency.
Is the BDS degree accepted in Canada?
It is accepted as the starting point. You apply to the NDEB, which assesses your degree, and then you take the AFK, ACJ and either the NDECC, the BTDPC bridge program or a degree-completion program.
Can I go to the USA on an F-1 visa after BDS?
Yes, through a master’s such as an MPH or a research MS. You may get 12 months of OPT, plus 24 more only if the degree is STEM-designated. It is a real pathway, but it is expensive and it does not license you as a dentist.
How long does it take to become a dentist in the USA after BDS?
Plan on about 4 to 5 years: roughly 6 to 12 months for the INBDE, about a year for the application cycle, then 2 to 3 years of Advanced Standing.
