What to Do After BDS in India: Every Career Path, Including the US and Canada

After BDS in India you have four real directions: specialise at home through NEET MDS, build a career in India without MDS, become a licensed dentist in the US through the INBDE and an Advanced Standing program, or qualify in Canada through the NDEB process that starts with the AFK. A fifth route, a master’s degree abroad on a student visa, gets you into the US or Canada first, but it does not make you a licensed dentist on its own.

Who this guide is for: Indian dentists with a BDS (Bachelor of Dental Surgery), interns about to finish, and BDS or MDS graduates weighing a DDS or DMD abroad.

240questions in NEET MDS, in 3 hours
500questions in the US INBDE, over 2 days
3NDEB Equivalency exams in Canada: AFK, ACJ, NDECC
12 + 24months of US work permission after study: OPT, plus STEM OPT if your degree qualifies

How The Study Boards helps you after BDS

One team for every exam between your BDS and a licence abroad

The Study Boards prepares Indian dentists for the US and Canadian routes on this page:

  • INBDE course: 35,000+ questions, faculty-written Modules, Master Files, test series and a nightly live test at 9 PM New York time. 99% of students who complete the course pass on the first attempt.
  • Plans: $299 for 3 months, $499 for 6 months, $899 for 12 months, or $39 a month.
  • Canada: AFK and ADAT courses. Applications: the CAAPID application program, TOEFL, bench test prep with Dr. Kaur and interview prep with Dr. T.
  • Personal guidance: the course is extremely personalised. Red lines and assignments are given to you on the go, the course learns from the way you study, and our faculty assist you.

We run no live classes or lectures; the live part is the test. See the INBDE course blueprint.

Which path fits you? Pick what matters most

Choose the one statement that sounds most like you. Each answer tells you where to start.

Choose an option above to see where to start.
India: specialise

Your route is NEET MDS, run by the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS). Start with India options.

USA: licence

Your route is the INBDE, then a 2 to 3-year Advanced Standing program through ADEA CAAPID that ends in a DDS or DMD. An AEGD or residency through ADEA PASS is the other route.

Start with the US routes and our full DDS in USA guide for Indian dentists.

Canada: licence

Your route starts with the NDEB Assessment of Fundamental Knowledge (AFK), or with the ADAT if you aim for a degree-completion program.

Start with the Canada routes and how Indian dentists can practise in Canada.

Visa-first

A master’s degree such as an MPH or a STEM-designated MS can get you an F-1 visa (US) or a study permit (Canada), and then work permission. It is financially exhausting, but a real pathway.

Read the visa-first section before you pay any deposit.

Non-clinical

Public health, research and hospital administration all use your BDS, often after an MPH or MHA. See India options and study-abroad routes.

Option 1 and 2

Career options after BDS in India

Your BDS is a four-year course followed by a compulsory one-year rotatory internship. Dental education is now overseen by the National Dental Commission (NDC), set up under the National Dental Commission Act, 2023, which took over from the Dental Council of India.24

MDS

Specialise through NEET MDSNEET MDS is the single entrance test for MDS seats. You need a recognised BDS, State Dental Council registration and a completed one-year internship by the cut-off date (31 May for the 2026 exam). The 2026 paper had 240 questions in 3 hours, with 4 marks for a correct answer and 1 mark deducted for a wrong one.12Seats through counselling

AFMS

Army Dental Corps and Armed Forces seatsNBEMS gives the Directorate General of Dental Services a separate merit list from NEET MDS for MDS seats in Armed Forces institutions and for a Short Service Commission in the Army Dental Corps.2Uses your NEET MDS result

Clinic

Clinical practiceWork as an associate, then open your own clinic. Many BDS dentists build strong practices without an MDS, and this experience helps a US or Canadian application later.Your State Dental Council registration

Govt

Government and public sector postsCentral and state governments recruit dental surgeons through their own notifications. Rules, age limits and exams differ by state, so watch your state’s public service commission and health department.Check each notification

MPH

Public health, administration, researchAn MPH, a hospital administration degree or clinical research uses your BDS outside the chair, and these fields travel abroad too.India or abroad

Teach

TeachingDental colleges hire faculty, and senior academic posts usually expect an MDS. If teaching is your goal, NEET MDS stays on your list.Usually after MDS

NEET MDS 2026: the qualifying percentile was lowered on 12 October 2026The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare cut the qualifying percentile by 20.576 for each category: General and EWS to 29.424, SC, ST and OBC to 19.424, and UR-PwD to 24.424.3 If you sat the 2026 exam and thought you missed the cut-off, check your eligibility for counselling again now.

If NEET MDS did not go your way this year, that is not the end of your plans. Our separate guide on MDS alternatives for Indian dentists walks through each option, including how your NEET MDS preparation carries over to the INBDE.

Option 3

Become a dentist in the US after BDS

An Indian BDS does not convert to a US degree. To practise, nearly every Indian dentist passes the INBDE, then completes a US program. The INBDE is accepted in all US states and territories, and graduates of non-CODA schools submit a Certification of Eligibility to sit it.5

Route after the INBDE How you apply What you get
Advanced Standing / IDP ADEA CAAPID A US DDS or DMD in 2 to 3 years. The main route to a full licence in most states.
AEGD (Advanced Education in General Dentistry) ADEA PASS A 1 or 2-year general dentistry residency. Some states give a limited licence after it; rules vary by state.
Residency (specialty or general practice) ADEA PASS Specialty training. More competitive for international dentists.
Teaching Direct to dental schools Faculty roles; some states offer a limited faculty licence.

ADEA PASS for the 2026-27 cycle opened on 13 May 2026 and closes on 12 February 2027.7 To choose between the two services, read CAAPID or PASS: how to pick the right path.

What the INBDE tests

The INBDE is a pass/fail exam of 500 questions over two days, with case sets built around a patient box. Its content splits into Diagnosis and Treatment Planning (36%), Oral Health Management (42%) and Practice and Profession (22%), and is mapped to 10 Foundation Knowledge areas.6 Your BDS subjects are all there, tested through patients.

The cost, honestlyAn Advanced Standing program costs roughly $250,000 to $450,000 all-in. Almost everyone finances it with loans: private loans, loans with a co-signer who is a US citizen or green-card holder, and a few international lenders that need no co-signer. It is a large number, but it is a planned one: work out your loan options before you apply, not after. Our page on whether it is worth it works through the numbers.

For document lists, ECE evaluation, TOEFL, CAAPID, bench tests and interviews, step by step, use our DDS in USA guide for Indian dentists. If you are in the US already and want to work while you prepare, read about dental hygiene for foreign-trained dentists.

Option 4

Become a dentist in Canada after BDS

Canada has three entry points for a dentist from a non-accredited program, such as an Indian BDS.8

NDEB Equivalency ProcessThree exams: the Assessment of Fundamental Knowledge (AFK), the Assessment of Clinical Judgement (ACJ) and the NDECC. Then the Certification Process: the Virtual OSCE, NDEB certification and a provincial licence.8 Full detail in our NDEB Equivalency guide for Indian dentists.
Qualifying or degree-completion programsAn accredited program at a Canadian faculty of dentistry.8 Many ask for the ADAT. See ADAT and Canadian programs for Indian dentists.
BTDPC bridge programFor people who have started the Equivalency Process but not yet passed the NDECC.8 It needs Canadian citizenship, permanent residency or protected status, so it suits dentists already settled in Canada. Read who qualifies for the bridge.

Option 5

The visa-first route: study abroad now, licence later

Many BDS graduates mainly want to get to the US or Canada. They enrol in a master’s program that gives them a student visa, then work permission, then look for a longer-term status. This is financially exhausting, but a real pathway, and many people find work afterwards.

United States: F-1, then OPT

Get admitted to a program that does not need a US licenceFor example an MPH, a master’s in health administration, an MS in epidemiology, biostatistics or oral biology, or a research MS. The school, if SEVP-certified, issues a Form I-20. You pay the I-901 SEVIS fee before you enter, and you may arrive up to 30 days before your start date.11
OPT after you graduateUp to 12 months of work permission per education level.9
STEM OPT, only for STEM degreesA further 24 months if your degree is on the DHS STEM list and your employer uses E-Verify.9 Epidemiology (26.1309), Biostatistics (26.1102) and Biomedical Sciences (26.0102) are on the list. General public health (51.2201) and health administration are not.10 Ask the school which CIP code your exact program carries before you accept.
Then H-1B or another statusAn employer can file an H-1B petition; a cap-gap extension can bridge the gap if your OPT runs out first.9
$

Example: Touro University California, MPH$1,070 per credit for 2026-27; the 42-credit track is $44,940 in tuition, before living costs.12

$$

Example: Columbia University, 2-year MPH$49,888 estimated tuition for 2026-27, about $8,391 a year in program fees, and listed living costs of about $31,000 (housing $16,515, food $8,384 and more).13

Canada: study permit, then PGWP, then permanent residence

Study permitCanada caps study permits. For 2026 it plans up to 408,000, about 7% below 2025. From 1 January 2026, master’s and doctoral students at public institutions no longer need a provincial attestation letter.14
Post-Graduation Work PermitYour program must be at least 8 months long. Master’s graduates have no field-of-study requirement, but need CLB 7 in English (or NCLC 7 in French) in all four skills.15
Permanent residenceExpress Entry’s Canadian Experience Class needs 1 year of skilled Canadian work experience in the last 3 years.16 As a permanent resident, you also become eligible for the BTDPC bridge.
Before you pay a depositA student visa does not make you a licensed dentist. In the US you still need the INBDE and a CAAPID or PASS program; in Canada, the NDEB route. Your first jobs are usually in research, public health or other non-clinical roles, or as a dental assistant or hygienist where the rules allow. Budget for tuition plus living costs, and for months without income. This is not immigration advice: confirm the details with the school’s international office or an immigration lawyer.

Quick answers

Frequently asked questions

What is the best career option after BDS in India?
There is no single best option; it depends on what you want. If you want to specialise in India, prepare for NEET MDS. If you want to practise in the US, start the INBDE. If you want Canada, start the AFK. If you want income now, clinical practice in India is a strong start and builds the experience US and Canadian programs value.
Can I do a DDS in the USA after BDS without an MDS?
Yes. A BDS is enough to sit the INBDE and apply to Advanced Standing programs through ADEA CAAPID. An MDS can strengthen your profile, but it is not required and usually does not shorten the program. Our BDS or MDS to DDS/DMD guide explains why.
Which is better after BDS: MDS in India or DDS in the USA?
They lead to different lives. An MDS makes you a specialist in India. A US DDS or DMD takes 2 to 3 years after the INBDE and admission, costs far more and is usually financed with loans, but leads to a US licence. Many dentists prepare for both because the subjects overlap.
Can I go to the US or Canada on a student visa after BDS?
Yes. Programs such as an MPH or a research MS do not need a US licence, so a BDS graduate can enrol and get an F-1 visa. Canada issues study permits for postgraduate programs. These routes are expensive and do not make you a licensed dentist by themselves. Check visa specifics with the school’s international office or an immigration lawyer.
Is public health a STEM degree for OPT?
General public health is not on the DHS STEM list. Epidemiology and Biostatistics are. Your eligibility for the 24-month STEM OPT extension depends on the CIP code of your exact program, so ask the school before you accept an offer.
