UNMC Dental School for International Dentists: The Advanced Standing Dental Program (2026 Guide)
The University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) College of Dentistry runs a 29-month Advanced Standing Dental Program in Lincoln that takes four to six internationally trained dentists a year into its DDS class, and it accepts only US citizens and permanent residents. You apply through ADEA CAAPID with a passing INBDE and a TOEFL iBT of 100; the last window closed on June 1, 2026, for a January 4, 2027 start.
Who this guide is for: Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi and Nepali dentists (BDS), and other internationally trained dentists, who hold a US green card or citizenship and are aiming for a US DDS or DMD through the INBDE and ADEA CAAPID.
How The Study Boards helps you get into UNMC
- INBDE first: our INBDE Premium Boards course gives you 35,000+ questions, faculty-written Modules and Master Files, full test series, nightly live tests at 9 PM New York time, and a 99% first-attempt pass rate for students who complete the course.
- Personalised to you: the course is extremely personalised. It learns from the way you study, red lines and assignments are given to you on the go, and faculty are there to assist you.
- TOEFL 100: UNMC’s English bar is one of the highest. Our TOEFL course for dentists is built for it.
- Bench and interview: bench test preparation with Dr. Kaur for the manikin skills test, and interview preparation with Dr. T for the on-site interview.
- Your file: our CAAPID application program builds your essays and school list.
UNMC Advanced Standing at a glance
From UNMC’s own pages and the ADEA CAAPID listing, checked in October 2026.
What the 29 months look like
You join the DDS class in the second semester of its second year, which covers preclinical general dentistry lectures and labs. A course built for Advanced Standing students then moves you into the third- and fourth-year clinical and didactic courses.13
The catalog lists 97 credit hours in all.4 Graduates can apply for US licensure; UNMC notes that some return to their home countries with their new skills.3
What UNMC focuses on, and what that means for you
These points come from UNMC’s program page, admissions page and CAAPID profile. The advice under them is ours.
A very small, mentored classFour to six students, with small classes and personalised mentoring named as program features. UNMC describes a supportive, collaborative learning community.13
Simulation and digital dentistryA clinical and virtual simulation lab with virtual reality trainers, and a digital design studio with CAD/CAM, 3D printers and milling machines.1
Outreach and private-practice settingsCommunity outreach for underserved people, and more than 30 extramural practice sites, including private practice.1
Research and leadershipStudent-led research presented at national meetings, and leadership of a student organization.1
A strict English standardTOEFL iBT 100, required even of US citizens, from a test taken after October 1, 2024.2 This is higher than many Advanced Standing programs ask.
An interview and bench test togetherNo one is accepted without an interview, and the interview includes a manikin-based psychomotor skills test. You cannot request an interview; the committee decides.2
- Show you will be a good member of a class of five. Write about teamwork, how you take feedback and how you help colleagues, not only about your own achievements.
- If you have used digital workflows (intraoral scanning, CAD/CAM, 3D printing) or taken part in research, describe what you did. UNMC lists both as part of how its students learn.
- Give outreach real detail: who you served, where and for how long. Pick letter writers (one faculty member, two mentors or employers) who can speak to your conduct and professional ability.
- Take the TOEFL early. A 100 is the gate; a 98 means a year’s wait.
Requirements in detail
UNMC reviews only complete applications and accepts no updates after June 1.2
Selection steps and the application timeline
This is how the 2026 cycle ran. UNMC has not posted next cycle’s dates; its catalog says the window opens in March with a June 1 deadline.4

Cost and financing
UNMC publishes a separate cost of attendance for the Advanced Standing years. Tap a year.5
Our sum of UNMC’s three 2026-27 budgets. UNMC says the budgets are for 2026-27 only and do not reflect future years, so expect later years to cost more.
Before you are accepted, budget for the INBDE ($1,325), CAAPID ($264 for the first program, $115 for each extra one), your TOEFL and ECE or WES, and UNMC’s own non-refundable fees.278 See what it costs to apply to US dental schools.
How you pay for it
Advanced Standing usually costs roughly $250,000 to $450,000 all-in, and UNMC sits in the middle of that range. Almost everyone finances it with loans, so do not let the number stop you.
UNMC says US citizens may apply for financial aid through studentaid.gov, and the College of Dentistry offers no scholarships of its own.2 Green-card holders are also eligible for federal student aid.6 Across the US, the other common routes are private loans, co-signer loans with a US citizen or green-card holder, and a few international lenders that need no co-signer. Plan without a salary: UNMC does not allow students to work while enrolled.2

Other routes if UNMC is not the right fit
Four to six places a year is very few, so apply to several programs.
Advanced Standing elsewhereOther US schools run 2 to 3 year programs to a DDS or DMD, mostly through ADEA CAAPID. Compare them in our full list of US dental schools and the Advanced Standing programs guide.
AEGD programsSome states give a limited licence after an AEGD; the rules vary by state. You apply through ADEA PASS. See AEGD programs for international dentists.
Residency directlySpecialty residencies through ADEA PASS. This is more competitive for internationally trained dentists. Read CAAPID or PASS.
TeachingSome dentists start in teaching and research roles at dental schools while they plan their next step.
If you are also weighing Canada, the AFK route through the NDEB is the first exam there, and much of your INBDE study carries over.
