What Harvard focuses on

Harvard says what it values in plain words. Each card gives the fact from Harvard’s pages, then our advice on what to do with it.

Oral health as part of whole-body healthHarvard describes its mission as advancing dental care on the principle that oral health is essential to overall well-being, and the ASID page names a focus on oral-systemic health.16Our advice: in your CAAPID essay and interview, show cases where you linked a patient’s medical condition to your dental plan: diabetes and periodontal care, anticoagulants before extraction, referrals to a physician.
Grades matterThere is no GPA minimum, but Harvard says it mainly accepts candidates with mostly As and Bs on their transcripts.1Our advice: if your marks were uneven, your INBDE preparation and a strong TOEFL are where you show academic strength now.
Research, work and extra degrees are not prioritisedHarvard states that it does not prioritise applicants with research experience, work experience or advanced graduate degrees. It only requires a BDS or equivalent.1Our advice: do not pad your file with an MDS or publications for their own sake. Explain clearly what you learned and why Harvard’s model fits you.
Science-based lettersThe preferred letters are a Dean’s Institutional Evaluation Form and letters from faculty who taught you biology, chemistry or physics, or who supervised your research. If your BDS had no such courses, a preclinical teacher can write instead.12Our advice: ask your basic science and preclinical teachers early. They are the people Harvard asks for by name.
A conversational interviewInterviews are by invitation, in spring, in up to three rounds. Harvard calls them conversational and says it wants to know you as a clinician and a future colleague.1Our advice: practise speaking naturally about your background, readiness and goals. Memorised answers sound wrong in a conversation.
English with no exceptionsHarvard sets section minimums as well as an overall score, adjusted to meet Massachusetts dental licensure rules, and says there are no exceptions.23Our advice: treat the speaking section (23 on the old scale) as the real target, because it is the highest bar.

What Harvard asks for

Requirements in detail

Everything goes through ADEA CAAPID. Harvard asks you not to email or post documents to the school.1

A BDS or equivalent from outside the US and CanadaThe track is only for dentists who completed their dental degree outside the United States and Canada. It cannot be combined with a Harvard Advanced Graduate Education (AGE) degree.1
A passing INBDE resultHarvard requires a pass on the INBDE, or NBDE Parts I and II, and says you do not have to pass on the first try.1 The INBDE costs $1,325 for internationally trained dentists ($890 plus a $435 processing fee) as of October 2026.9 Start with our INBDE Premium Boards course and the INBDE and CAAPID timeline.
TOEFL iBT with section minimumsFor tests taken before January 21, 2026: 90 overall, with speaking 23, writing 21, reading 21 and listening 17. For tests taken after that date: 4.5 overall and 4.5 in every section. Harvard accepts MyBest scores and the Home Edition, prefers in-person tests, and will not accept scores over two years old. Institution code 3430.13 A waiver is possible only with a qualifying degree taught in English; the CAAPID listing names the UK, Canada, Australia, Ireland and New Zealand.23 If you are short, see our TOEFL course for dentists.
Course-by-course evaluationFrom ECE or WES, submitted through CAAPID. Official transcripts are needed after acceptance.12 Read WES or ECE: which do you need before you order.
Three to four lettersPreferred: a Dean’s letter (Institutional Evaluation Form) and science or research faculty letters. A third letter can come from a faculty member of your choice or a US dentist you shadowed or worked for. A fourth letter is optional, and all must be in English.12 Our letters of recommendation guide helps you plan who to ask.
CV and a 500-word letter of intentHarvard counts your CAAPID personal statement as its letter of intent. Interview invitees get a supplemental application by email to complete before the first interview.12
Not a US citizen?Harvard offers visa sponsorship for international students. If your current US visa allows study you can apply on it; if not, you will move to a visa sponsored by Harvard.1

Off campus, Harvard’s totals are $95,725, $165,410 and $165,602, or $426,737 in all. The figures are projections for 2026-27 and can change.

Before you are accepted, budget for the INBDE ($1,325), the CAAPID fee ($264 for your first program, $115 for each extra one), the ECE report ($199) and the $150 Harvard fee, plus your TOEFL.789 Our breakdown of what it costs to apply to US dental schools lists the rest.

How international dentists pay for it

Advanced Standing usually costs roughly $250,000 to $450,000 all-in, and Harvard sits near the top of that range. Almost everyone finances it with loans, so do not let the number alone stop you.

Be clear on Harvard’s rules: international students are not eligible for US federal loans or need-based grant aid. They may qualify for certain Harvard scholarships and private loans, which Harvard says have strict limits on availability and amount. Harvard advises international students to plan to cover nearly all costs from outside funds and to show proof of funding before the I-20 is issued.5

Across the US, the common routes are private loans, co-signer loans with a US citizen or green-card holder, and a few international lenders that need no co-signer. Read is becoming a US dentist worth it for the full picture.

About eight places a year is very few, so plan to apply to several programs.

AEGD

AEGD programsSome states give a limited licence after an AEGD; the rules vary by state. You apply through ADEA PASS. Harvard’s ASID Track cannot be combined with its own AGE degrees. See AEGD programs for international dentists.

PASS

Residency directlySpecialty residencies through ADEA PASS. This is more competitive for internationally trained dentists. Read CAAPID or PASS to choose.
