What Ponce focuses on

Ponce’s track is unlike any other on your list. Each card gives the fact from Ponce’s own pages, then our advice.

Spanish is not optionalApplicants must be bilingual in English and Spanish. Your language skill is judged in the interview, where you are asked questions in both languages. Candidates who fall short are referred to Ponce’s Language Support Program for a free verbal assessment.1Our advice: if you do not speak Spanish today, Ponce is not the right school for this cycle. If you do, put it on your CAAPID CV with real examples of patients you treated in Spanish.
Real-world private practicePonce’s stated objectives are hands-on care in private practices, exposure to billing, insurance, staffing and scheduling, and a bridge to US standards of care, documentation and patient communication.1Our advice: in your essay, describe how you ran a busy chair at home: patient volume, appointment flow, records, working with a team. Show you want to learn the business side, not only the clinical side.
Underserved, rural and Hispanic communitiesPonce links the track to workforce shortages and access to care in underserved or rural areas, and to culturally competent care for Hispanic and immigrant communities.1Our advice: camps, rural postings, government service and free clinics belong in your file. Say who you served and why it matters to you.
Mobility across the islandRotations run at sites across Puerto Rico, and Ponce asks for significant capacity to spend time in different places.12Our advice: say plainly in your interview that you can travel and adjust housing. It answers a concern the school has already named.
A three-part bench testThe bench test covers operative dentistry, fixed prosthodontics and RPD design skills.1Our advice: practise class II and crown preparations under time, and drill RPD design on study casts until clasp and rest choices are quick.
Letters from people who know youPonce’s CAAPID listing asks for one academic letter and up to two letters that speak to your advocacy experience, from people who know you rather than those with impressive titles. The program page recommends at least one from your Dean or a faculty member.12Our advice: pick a supervisor from your community work for the advocacy letters.

How international dentists pay for it

Advanced Standing usually costs roughly $250,000 to $450,000 all-in, and Ponce is at the lower end of that range. Almost everyone finances it with loans, so plan rather than worry.

Ponce’s financial services handbook says foreign students need US citizenship documents or a green card before receiving scholarships, grants or loans, and that foreign students who want private loans must provide immigration documents and a co-signer who meets the lender’s criteria.4 Across the US, the common routes are private loans, co-signer loans with a US citizen or green-card holder, and a few international lenders that need no co-signer. Read is becoming a US dentist worth it for the full picture.

Other routes if Ponce is not the right fit

Thirty places, a Spanish requirement and island-wide rotations make Ponce a narrow fit. Most dentists apply to several programs.
