You need your official INBDE (or NBDE Parts I and II) result, TOEFL and ECE report at the time you apply, and you must be a US citizen or green-card holder. If those are in hand, submit this week.2

Who this guide is for: Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi and Nepali dentists with a BDS, and other internationally trained dentists aiming for a US DDS or DMD through the UTHealth Houston IDEP. This program is only open to US citizens and permanent residents, so it suits dentists already living in the US with a green card.

How The Study Boards helps you get into UTHealth Houston

  • INBDE first: our INBDE Premium Boards course gives you 35,000+ questions, faculty-written Modules and Master Files, full test series and nightly live tests at 9 PM New York time. Students who complete the course have a 99% first-attempt pass rate. UTHealth wants official INBDE results with your application, so if you are aiming for the next cycle, start now.
  • Built around you: at The Study Boards, in Dr. T’s words, our courses are extremely personalised. Red lines and assignments are given on the go, the course learns from the way you study, and faculty assist you at every step.
  • TOEFL: our TOEFL course for dentists gets you to the 92 (or 5 on the new scale) that UTHealth asks for.
  • CAAPID file: the Master the CAAPID Application program builds your essays and your school list with our faculty. For UTHealth, that means a CV and statement that show your years in practice and your community work.
  • Hands and interview: bench test preparation with Dr. Kaur and interview preparation with Dr. T. UTHealth tests your hand skills on interview day, and there are only five places, so both matter.

What the 27 months look like

The Bridge Training is a full-time calibration and review of the art, science and practice of dentistry across the clinical disciplines. It starts remotely in mid-April with online modules and assessments, then moves to full-time, in-person teaching in Houston from mid-May. UTHealth does not allow outside activities that interfere with it. When you finish, you join the third year of the DDS program in August.12

What UTHealth Houston focuses on

Built from UTHealth’s mission, the IDEP listing and the program requirements in its 2026-2027 catalog.

Who can applyUS citizens and green-card holders onlyThis is the biggest filter. The CAAPID listing says applicants must be US citizens or permanent residents, and proof is required on acceptance.2
ExperienceYears in practice and postgraduate trainingThe catalog lists years of experience as a practising dentist and postgraduate education among the program requirements. The program is built for dentists with substantial clinical competence and experience.3
CommunityCommunity and voluntary workCommunity and voluntary engagement is a listed requirement, as are shadowing hours or work experience in health-related areas.3
HandsA hand skills assessmentEveryone invited to the in-person interview sits a hand skills assessment. UTHealth does not publish the exercises.12
MissionTexas first, then the nation and the worldThe school’s mission is to improve human health through education, patient care, service and research in oral health, for Texas, the nation and the world.4
PaceA full-time, intensive startThe Bridge is full-time and outside activities that interfere are not allowed, so the school wants people who can commit fully from April.2
Our advice (not the school’s words): what to show in your CAAPID essays and interview

  • Put your years in practice up front. Give numbers: years, patients a week, the procedures you did yourself.
  • Show community and volunteer work with dates and hours, and any US shadowing or health-related job you have held.
  • If you have an MDS or other postgraduate training, explain what it added to your clinical skill, not just the title.
  • In the interview, link your story to Texas: why Houston, and how you plan to serve patients there after the DDS.
  • Show you can go full-time from April. If you work now, say how you will step away for the Bridge.

UTHealth’s own figures

Cost and financing

UTHealth gives round figures rather than a year-by-year budget. Tap a stage to see them.12

Bridge Training, including all instruments and suppliesabout $40,000
Bridge totalabout $40,000
Tuition and feesup to about $100,000

The figure depends on whether you are a Texas resident.

Tuition and feesup to about $100,000

Living costs in Houston are extra and not included in these figures.

Bridge Trainingabout $40,000
Two DDS years, at mostabout $200,000
Tuition and fees, upper endabout $240,000

The 2026-2027 catalog gives an older estimate of $225,000 in total, with a $25,000 Bridge. The current program page and CAAPID listing say $40,000 for the Bridge, so plan on the higher figure.

Budget for the application stage too: the INBDE ($1,325), the CAAPID fee ($264 for your first program, $115 for each extra one), the ECE report ($199), the UTHealth supplemental fee and the $300 hand skills fee if invited, plus your TOEFL.567 Our breakdown of what it costs to apply to US dental schools covers the full list.

How international dentists pay for it

Advanced Standing usually costs roughly $250,000 to $450,000 all-in. UTHealth sits at the lower end of that range on tuition. Almost everyone finances it with loans, so do not let the number stop you.

Because every IDEP student is a US citizen or permanent resident, the school asks accepted students to set up a payment plan through its PACE Center and points to its Gift Aid information.2 Ask UTHealth Student Financial Services which loans apply to the Bridge and to the DDS years. Across the US, the common routes are private loans, co-signer loans with a US citizen or green-card holder, and a few international lenders that need no co-signer.
