NYU Dentistry Advanced Standing Program for International Dentists: Requirements, Cost and How to Get In
NYU College of Dentistry’s Advanced Standing Program for International Dentists is a 28-month, full-time program that ends with a DDS degree. You apply only through ADEA CAAPID, and you need a passed INBDE, a TOEFL iBT score of 5 (100 on the old scale) and an ECE course-by-course evaluation.1
There is no bench test. Instead, every applicant records a Kira Talent video interview, and finalists are invited to an in-person Candidate Day in New York.13
How The Study Boards helps you get into NYU Advanced Standing
- INBDE first: NYU will not review you without a pass on file. Our course gives you faculty-created Modules for every subject, 35,000+ focused questions, the Master and Grand Test Series (8-hour mock exams), daily tasks and nightly live tests at 9 PM New York time.
- Built around you: The Study Boards courses are extremely personalised. Red lines and assignments are given to you on the go, the course learns from the way you study, and faculty are there to assist you.
- The rest of the file: our TOEFL course gets you to 5, the CAAPID application program builds your statement and letters, and our NYU interview preparation trains you for the Kira video and Candidate Day.

NYU Advanced Standing at a glance
Taken from NYU Dentistry’s own pages and NYU’s ADEA CAAPID listing, as of October 2026. NYU calls it “Advanced Standing into the DDS program”. Students “admitted with advanced placement” join the existing DDS class.1

Requirements in detail
NYU only reviews complete applications. Its own advice is to finish every requirement before you submit to CAAPID.1
Pass the INBDEYou must pass the INBDE. If you passed NBDE Parts I and II, NYU “may” consider you. The ADA sends your result straight to ADEA CAAPID, so a pass has to be on file before you can be reviewed. For international candidates the INBDE costs $890 plus a $435 processing fee, $1,325 in total.18
TOEFL iBT: 5 on the new scaleScore below 5 and you must retake it. On the old scale the minimum is 100, with no exceptions. NYU accepts the Home Edition but not “MyBest” scores. For the 2026 cycle, any test taken before January 2025 had to be retaken, and new results had to arrive before 1 June.1
ECE course-by-course, nothing elseNYU accepts only an ECE course-by-course evaluation sent to CAAPID. It does not accept WES or any other evaluator, and it will not review an application without ECE. The report costs $199 at ECE’s current price.17
Three letters of evaluationOne from your dental school dean and two from dental school faculty members. All three go directly to ADEA CAAPID. A letter from a US dentist is not on NYU’s list.1
NYU processing feeA non-refundable $100 fee. NYU emails payment instructions after it receives your application from CAAPID. This is on top of the CAAPID fee of $264 for your first program and $115 for each extra program.16
Criminal background checkEvery admitted student completes one before starting. NYU can withdraw an offer if it shows a red flag.1

How NYU selects Advanced Standing students
NYU uses three stages. Each one is a filter, so prepare for the next stage before you clear the current one.
The application cycle on a timeline
These are NYU’s dates for the class that starts in January 2027. NYU has not posted dates for the next cycle yet, so use this year’s pattern to plan and confirm on NYU’s page.13

What NYU Advanced Standing costs, and how people pay for it
NYU publishes direct costs for each stage of the program. Advanced Standing students pay for six months as D2 students, then a full D3 and D4 year.2
| 2026-27 rates | D2 (6 months) | D3 (12 months) | D4 (12 months) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tuition | $55,620 | $111,240 | $111,240 |
| Mandatory fees | $124 | $337 | $202 |
| Instruments | $3,549 | $7,098 | $7,098 |
| Health insurance | $3,129 | $5,099 | $5,099 |
| Total direct cost | $62,422 | $123,774 | $123,639 |
That is $309,835 in direct costs across 28 months, using 2026-27 rates. Tuition usually rises each year, so later years may cost more.2
Add living costs to get the real total
NYU does not publish living costs for Advanced Standing. For its four-year DDS students, NYU estimates housing, food, books, transport and personal costs at about $50,700 for a 12-month year (2026-27).2 Spread over 28 months, that is roughly $118,000.

How to prepare: our full plan for NYU
Five things decide an NYU application. Here is the plan The Study Boards uses for each one.
Pass the INBDE first timeNothing moves without a pass on file at CAAPID. Our INBDE Premium Boards course has 12 sections, 35,000+ questions and nightly live tests at 9 PM New York time. 99% of students who complete the course pass on their first attempt.
- Pass Guarantee: finish on time with no overdue days, score 60%+ on every test, and if you still do not pass, we refund the course fee and the exam registration fee (about $1,000).
- Your questions are answered by US-licensed dentists, not AI.
Build an application that gets readMaster the CAAPID Application covers the personal statement, the review of your three letters, your CV, a strategy session with Dr. T and three mock interviews. Every document is reviewed by a five-faculty bench. 300+ dentists placed, limited to 40 students per cycle.
- NYU wants letters from your dean and two faculty members, so we check each letter against that.
- School selection, so NYU is not your only application.
Interview prep built for NYU’s two stagesOur NYU interview preparation follows NYU’s order: Kira training first, then a one-on-one interview strategy session with Dr. T and Dr. Slesnick once you are through. Live online and recorded so you can review your delivery.
- Session 1: how to structure answers to personal, behavioural, ethical and NYU-specific questions.
- Session 2: a full mock interview with detailed feedback.
Reach a 5 on the new TOEFLNYU will not waive the TOEFL or accept less than 5. Our TOEFL iBT course for dentists is a 45-day, mentor-reviewed program built for the January 2026 format, including the new Listen and Repeat and Interview speaking tasks.
- Retake early: NYU did not accept tests taken before January 2025 for the 2026 cycle.
Other routes if NYU is not the right fit
NYU is one program with 30 to 40 places. Passing the INBDE opens four routes, and many dentists apply to more than one at once.
Advanced Standing at another schoolTwo to three years to a DDS or DMD, all through ADEA CAAPID. Each school has its own rules on bench tests, TOEFL and evaluators. Compare them in our Advanced Standing programs guide and full list of US dental schools, then shortlist with the CAAPID directory method.
AEGD through ADEA PASSAn Advanced Education in General Dentistry program. Some states give a limited licence after an AEGD, but the rules vary by state, so check the state where you want to work. See AEGD programs for international dentists.
A specialty residency through PASSSome dentists apply straight to a residency such as orthodontics or endodontics. It is more competitive for international applicants. Start with CAAPID or PASS: how to pick.
TeachingSome international dentists join a US dental school as faculty or in an academic role. Requirements are set by each school and state, so ask the school directly.
