Indiana University International Dentist Program (IU-IDP): Advanced Standing Guide for International Dentists (2026)

Indiana University School of Dentistry’s International Dentist Program (IU-IDP) is a full-time Advanced Standing program of at least 30 months that starts each January and ends with a DDS degree. You apply through ADEA CAAPID, then complete IU’s supplemental application, a Kira assessment, a virtual interview and, if selected, a bench test.

Who this guide is for: Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi and Nepali dentists with a BDS, and other internationally trained dentists aiming for a US DDS or DMD, who are considering Indiana University.
Application status, October 2026: the 2026 IU-IDP cycle in CAAPID ran from March 5 to May 15, 2026, for a January 4, 2027 start. No window is open now. IU’s deadline is one of the earliest, so your INBDE, TOEFL and US experience need to be done by early May.

How The Study Boards helps you get into IU-IDP

  • INBDE first: IU wants the INBDE passed before you submit CAAPID. Our INBDE Premium Boards course gives you faculty-written Modules, Master Files, 35,000+ questions, the test series and nightly live tests at 9 PM New York time. Students who complete the course have a 99% first-attempt pass rate.
  • Personalised to you: our courses are extremely personalised. Red lines and assignments are given to you on the go, the course learns from the way you study, and faculty assist you all the way.
  • Kira, interview and bench: Kira interview prep with Dr. T trains you for IU’s video assessment, and bench test preparation with Dr. Kaur gets your typodont work ready.
  • TOEFL 100 and your file: our TOEFL course targets IU’s minimum, and the CAAPID application program builds your statement, letters and school list.

What IU focuses on, and what that means for you

The facts below come from IU’s own pages. The tips under each one are our advice, based on those facts.

US work

Recent US or Canadian experienceIU asks for 100 hours of shadowing US or Canadian dentists (in person or virtual), 20 hours of US continuing education, and a letter from a US or Canadian dental professional you have worked with in the past 12 months.2

Our adviceStart an observership early and keep a daily log. In your essay, describe what you learned about US practice, not just the hours.

Service

Community service, proven by a letterYour second letter must come from a US or Canadian nonprofit where you did unpaid community service in the past 12 months. IU’s mission is to advance oral and systemic health in Indiana and globally through teaching, research, patient care and service, and its outreach programs reach underserved people in Indianapolis, Indiana and abroad.25

Our adviceChoose ongoing service, such as a free clinic or food bank, over a one-day event. Talk about it in your interview with a real example.

Character

Perseverance and motivationIU asks your personal statement to show what makes you special, including challenges you have overcome. The Kira assessment looks at personality, potential and motivation as part of a holistic review.2

Our adviceBuild your statement around one hard moment and what you did next. Practise Kira answers on camera under a timer.

Hands

A blind, multi-faculty bench testThe bench test is done on a typodont with air turbine handpieces. Several faculty grade it without knowing whose work it is.2

Our adviceYour preparation has to speak for itself. Practise with an air turbine on a mounted typodont so the setting is familiar.

The school behind the programIU School of Dentistry is Indiana’s only dental school and trains about 80% of the state’s dentists. Students care for more than 19,000 patients a year, and its Oral Health Research Institute is known for preventive dentistry research.5 IU does not publish a minimum GPA or years-of-practice requirement for the IU-IDP.

What IU asks for

Requirements in detail

Send everything through CAAPID only. IU says not to send materials to the school.2

A passing INBDE before you submitYou must pass the INBDE, or NBDE Parts I and II, before you submit your CAAPID application. The ADA must send scores to CAAPID; IU does not accept scores you forward yourself.2 For international candidates the INBDE costs $1,325 as of October 2026.9 Plan it with our INBDE and CAAPID timeline.
TOEFL iBT, 100 or higherRequired if English is not your native language. Test center or Home Edition only, taken within two years of submission, sent by ETS to CAAPID. MyBest scores are not accepted and IU grants no waivers.2 See our TOEFL course for dentists.
ECE evaluationECE is the only evaluation service IU accepts. ECE’s course-by-course report costs $199.28 Read WES or ECE.
Two letters with strict rulesOne from a US or Canadian dental professional you have worked with, one from a US or Canadian nonprofit for unpaid community service, both within the past 12 months, on letterhead, with the writer’s address, phone, email and signature. IU calls writers at random to verify.2 See our letters guide.
100 hours of shadowing and 20 hours of US CEShadowing of US or Canadian dentists can be in person or virtual.2 Our daily observership notes template helps you record it.
A personal statementShow what makes you special and the challenges you have overcome. Your dental education and goals are optional topics.2 Read our personal statement guide.

IU’s own figures

Cost and financing

IU combines tuition and fees into one flat rate for this program, the same whether or not you live in Indiana.1

IU-IDP annual rate, 2024-25$118,598
IU-IDP annual rate, 2025-26$120,970
IU-IDP annual rate, 2026-27$123,390
Bench test fee, if invited$400
IU supplemental application fee$80

Rates are from Indiana University’s approved 2025-27 tuition and fee schedule.4 IU does not publish a full cost of attendance for the IU-IDP, so ask the admissions office how the rate is billed over 30 months and add Indianapolis living costs.

Before you are accepted, budget for the INBDE ($1,325), the CAAPID fee ($264 for your first program, $115 for each extra one), the ECE report ($199), the IU fee and the bench test fee, plus your TOEFL and US continuing education.8910 See what it costs to apply to US dental schools.

How international dentists pay for it

Advanced Standing usually costs roughly $250,000 to $450,000 all-in. Almost everyone finances it with loans, so do not let the number stop you.

IU says aid for IU-IDP students depends on financial need, citizenship and federal law.6 If you are not a US citizen or eligible non-citizen, the common routes are private loans, co-signer loans with a US citizen or green-card holder, and a few international lenders that need no co-signer. Other routes if IU is not the right fit

About 16 places a year is still a small number, so most dentists apply to several programs.

DDS/DMD

Advanced Standing elsewhereOther US schools run 2 to 3 year programs to a DDS or DMD, mostly through ADEA CAAPID. Compare them in our full list of US dental schools and the Advanced Standing programs guide.

AEGD

AEGD programsSome states give a limited licence after an AEGD; the rules vary by state. You apply through ADEA PASS. See AEGD programs for international dentists.

PASS

Residency directlySpecialty residencies through ADEA PASS. This is more competitive for internationally trained dentists. Read CAAPID or PASS.

Teach

TeachingSome dentists start in teaching and research roles at dental schools while they plan their next step.

If you are also weighing Canada, the AFK is the first exam on that route. Our NDEB AFK exam guide explains how it compares with the INBDE.

Quick answers

Frequently asked questions

Does Indiana University accept international dentists?
Yes. The IU-IDP is for graduates of international dental programs. IU says all qualified international dentists can apply; if you receive a provisional offer, you must hold or be able to apply for US or Canadian citizenship, permanent residency or a valid visa.
Can an Indian BDS graduate apply to Indiana’s Advanced Standing program?
Yes. You need a passed INBDE before you submit, TOEFL iBT 100, an ECE evaluation, two US or Canadian letters, 100 hours of shadowing US or Canadian dentists and 20 hours of US continuing education. The US experience is usually the slowest part for dentists still in India.
Do Pakistani dentists need the INBDE for Indiana University?
Yes. IU requires a pass on the INBDE, or NBDE Parts I and II, before you submit CAAPID, and the ADA must send the scores. Scores must arrive by the deadline for you to be considered for an interview.
What is the IU-IDP bench test?
After all interviews, a select group is invited to a bench test on a typodont using air turbine handpieces. Several faculty grade it without knowing whose work it is. The fee is $400 and IU provides the materials.
Does IU accept IELTS or WES?
No to both. IU accepts only the TOEFL iBT (100 minimum) and only ECE evaluations.
How much does IU-IDP cost?
IU charges a flat annual rate of $123,390 for 2026-27, the same for Indiana residents and non-residents. IU does not publish a full cost of attendance for the program, so add living costs and ask admissions how the 30 months are billed.
