MDS in India vs DDS in the USA: Cost, Time, Earnings and Which Fits You

An MDS is a 3-year specialist degree that makes you a specialist in India; a US DDS or DMD through Advanced Standing takes 2 to 3 years and is what lets a BDS holder get a full US licence. The MDS costs far less and keeps you home; the DDS costs roughly $250,000 to $450,000 all-in, but US dentists earn a median of $176,110 a year. Neither is “better” for everyone. It depends on where you want to live and practise.

$1,325INBDE fee for international candidates

Who this guide is for: Indian dentists with a BDS (Bachelor of Dental Surgery) deciding between NEET MDS and the US route, and MDS holders asking whether a DDS or DMD is still worth it. Pakistani, Bangladeshi and Nepali BDS holders face the same choice with their own PG exams.

How The Study Boards helps if you choose the DDS

The INBDE is your first step, and it is the one we teach

  • INBDE course: 35,000+ questions, faculty-written Modules, Master Files, test series and a nightly live test at 9 PM New York time. 99% first-attempt pass rate for students who complete the course.
  • Plans: $299 for 3 months, $499 for 6 months, $899 for 12 months, or $39 a month.
  • Beyond the exam: the CAAPID application program, TOEFL, bench test prep with Dr. Kaur and interview prep with Dr. T. For Canada, our AFK and ADAT courses.
  • Personal guidance: the course is extremely personalised. Red lines and assignments are given to you on the go, the course learns from how you study, and our faculty assist you. We run no live classes or lectures; the live part is the test.

Side by side

MDS vs DDS: the fair comparison

Every figure below comes from an official body or a university. Where no official figure exists, The Study Boards says so rather than guess.

Point MDS in India DDS/DMD in the USA (Advanced Standing)
What it is A specialist postgraduate degree in one branch, such as orthodontics or oral surgery The US first professional dental degree, which leads to a general dentist licence
Course length 3 years3 2 to 3 years (Tufts’ international program runs over three billing years; some schools run about 28 months)9
Entrance NEET MDS: 240 questions in 3 hours, 25% negative marking, then MCC or state counselling2 INBDE (500 questions over 2 days), credential evaluation, TOEFL, then ADEA CAAPID, often a bench test and interview56
Exam and application fees Rs 3,500 (General, OBC, EWS) or Rs 2,500 (SC, ST, PwD) for NEET MDS 20262 INBDE $890 + $435 non-CODA fee = $1,325; CAAPID $264 + $115 per extra program; plus school fees57
Tuition and living Low at government seats; much higher at private and deemed seats. No single official figure; the new National Dental Commission will set fee guidelines for private colleges1 Roughly $250,000 to $450,000 all-in. Tufts’ 2026-27 budget for its international program totals about $472,000 with Boston living costs9
Recognition Recognised in India; in most US states it does not meet the licence education rule4 A degree from a CODA-accredited program, the usual education requirement for a US licence4
Practice rights Specialist practice and teaching posts in India General dentist licence after a state clinical exam; US specialty needs a residency later
Earnings No official national salary data; depends on city, setting and specialty Median $176,110 a year for dentists; $170,950 for general dentists (BLS, May 2025)8
Funding Family funds or Indian education loans Private loans; international students usually need a US citizen or permanent-resident co-borrower9
The one fact that decides most casesThe ADA says that in most states, advanced dental training does not satisfy the licence education rule if your first dental degree came from a non-accredited program.4 So an Indian MDS does not replace a US DDS. If you want to practise in the US, you will almost certainly need Advanced Standing, with or without an MDS.

Money and time

MDS India vs USA: what each really costs

MDS

MDS costThe exam is cheap: Rs 3,500 for most candidates in 2026.2 Tuition is where it splits. A government seat costs little. A private or deemed seat can cost many times more, and fees are set by state fee committees or the institution. Add the time spent preparing for NEET MDS, which for many dentists means one or two attempts.Low to high, depending on the seat

DDS

DDS costPlan for roughly $250,000 to $450,000 all-in, including living costs; expensive cities can go above it. Almost everyone finances it with loans: private loans, co-signer loans with a US citizen or green-card holder, and a few international lenders need no co-signer. The debt is large, and so is the income that repays it.High, usually loan-funded

How long from BDS to practising

MDS: NEET prep + 3-year course~4 yrs
DDS: INBDE + 1 cycle + 2 to 3 years~4-5 yrs

Rough planning times, not official figures. The DDS line assumes about 6 to 12 months for the INBDE and one CAAPID cycle. See the INBDE and CAAPID timeline and is becoming a US dentist worth it.

Earnings, official sources only

What US dentists earn

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics publishes official median pay by specialty. The figures are for May 2025.8

Oral and maxillofacial surgeons$352K
Prosthodontists$311K
Orthodontists$289K
All dentists$176K
General dentists$171K

BLS also expects dentist jobs to grow 6% from 2025 to 2035, faster than average.8 India has no comparable official salary series for dentists, so we do not quote one. Ask senior colleagues in your city for real numbers before you decide; The Study Boards will not quote unofficial salary surveys.

A fair warning on the specialist numbersThose US specialist salaries need a US residency after your DDS. An Indian MDS in orthodontics does not let you practise as an orthodontist in the US.

Be honest with yourself

MDS or DDS: which is better for you?

MDS

Choose the MDS if

  • You want to live and practise in India long term.
  • You love one specialty and want to teach in a dental college.
  • You have a family practice or clinic to join.
  • A large foreign loan would cause you real stress.
DDS

Choose the DDS if

  • You want to live in the US and practise as a dentist there.
  • You can study for the INBDE and an application cycle without income.
  • You can take on a loan, or have a co-signer.
  • You want US-level pay and the option of a US specialty later.
Already have an MDS?It still helps, and many MDS holders prepare for the INBDE with The Study Boards. It strengthens your profile, your clinical confidence and your interview, and some MDS holders also aim for AEGD or residency. It does not usually shorten Advanced Standing. If you did not get an MDS seat, read MDS alternatives for Indian dentists and what to do after BDS in India.

If you choose the US

Every US route after the boards

All US licensing jurisdictions require the INBDE.4 After it, you have four routes.

1

Advanced Standing (IDP) via CAAPID2 to 3 years to a US DDS or DMD, and a full licence after the state clinical exam. See Advanced Standing programs.

2

AEGD via PASSSome states give a limited licence after it; rules vary. PASS costs $199 plus $92 per extra program in 2026-27.10

3

Residency via PASSSpecialty programs are more competitive and, in most states, do not give a licence on their own. See the residency guide.

4

TeachingFaculty roles at dental schools, with faculty licences in some states. Check each state board.

The other options

Canada, and the visa-first routes

Canada: the NDEB route, starting with the AFK
  • Equivalency Process: the AFK, the ACJ and the NDECC, then the Certification Process. Fees from 1 July 2025: AFK CA$1,000, ACJ CA$1,350, NDECC CA$6,500.11
  • BTDPC bridge program: about 8 months, for citizens and permanent residents who passed the AFK and ACJ. From 1 July 2026 graduates skip the NDECC.12
  • Degree-completion programs at Canadian dental faculties. Start with how to become a dentist in Canada.
Visa-first: US F-1 or Canadian study permit
  • USA: an MPH, MHA, dental public health or research MS on an F-1 visa, then up to 12 months of OPT, plus 24 more only for STEM-designated degrees, then an H-1B or another route.13 Read F-1 visa pathways for foreign dentists.
  • Canada: a postgraduate program on a study permit, then a Post-Graduation Work Permit, then Express Entry. Read study-permit pathways for foreign dentists.
  • The honest part: financially exhausting, but a real pathway, and many people find work afterwards, often in research or public health first. It does not license you as a dentist; you still need the INBDE or NDEB route. For specifics, ask the school’s international office or an immigration lawyer.

All options in one place: career options after BDS.

Quick answers

Frequently asked questions

MDS or DDS: which is better?
The MDS is better if you want to specialise and stay in India; it costs less and keeps you near family. The DDS is better if you want to practise in the US; it costs far more, but US dentists earn a median of $176,110 a year.
Is an MDS from India valid in the USA?
It is a respected degree, but in most states it does not meet the licence education requirement, because your first dental degree is from a non-CODA program. You will usually still need Advanced Standing to get a full licence.
Should I do an MDS before going to the USA?
Only if you would value the MDS for itself. It can strengthen your profile and help with AEGD or residency applications, but it adds three years and does not usually shorten Advanced Standing.
MDS India vs USA: which costs more?
The US route, by a wide margin. NEET MDS costs Rs 3,500 to sit. The US route starts with a $1,325 INBDE fee and CAAPID fees, and Advanced Standing usually costs $250,000 to $450,000 all-in.
Is NEET MDS harder than the INBDE?
They test different things. NEET MDS is a 3-hour, 240-question ranking exam with negative marking, where you compete for seats. The INBDE is a 2-day pass or fail exam; you need to reach the standard, not beat other candidates.
Can I do an MDS in the USA?
The US has no MDS. The closest are specialty residencies and some master’s programs through PASS. They are competitive and, in most states, do not give a licence on their own to a foreign-trained dentist.
