Iowa Dental Advanced Standing Program (IDASP) for International Dentists: 2026 Guide

The University of Iowa College of Dentistry and Dental Clinics runs the Iowa Dental Advanced Standing Program, a 30-month program that starts in January and ends with a CODA-accredited DDS degree. You apply through ADEA CAAPID, and after an interview day only up to four dentists are selected each year.

30months, January start, DDS
Up to 4places a year
100minimum TOEFL iBT (5.0 new scale)
5 partsinterview day, including a bench test

Who this guide is for: Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi and Nepali dentists with a BDS, and other internationally trained dentists aiming for a US DDS or DMD, who are thinking about Iowa’s small Advanced Standing class.
Application status, October 2026: the last Iowa cycle in CAAPID ran from March 5 to July 31, 2026, for a January 4, 2027 start. No window is open now. Iowa gives preference to US citizens, permanent residents and people with asylum or refugee status, so read the residency section before you plan.

How The Study Boards helps you get into Iowa

  • INBDE first: Iowa’s interview day includes a didactic test, so a deep INBDE preparation pays twice. Our INBDE Premium Boards course gives you faculty-written Modules, Master Files, 35,000+ questions, the test series and nightly live tests at 9 PM New York time. Students who complete the course have a 99% first-attempt pass rate.
  • Personalised to you: our courses are extremely personalised. Red lines and assignments are given to you on the go, the course learns from the way you study, and faculty assist you all the way.
  • Bench and interview day: bench test preparation with Dr. Kaur and interview preparation with Dr. T get you ready for the bench test, faculty interview and presentation.
  • TOEFL 100 and your file: our TOEFL course targets Iowa’s minimum and its writing exam, and the CAAPID application program builds your essays, letters and school list.

What the 30 months look like

The program begins with three to four months of online courses, then a mandatory pre-matriculation summer course that evaluates and calibrates you in clinical procedures so your work matches Iowa’s own students. You must pass every part before you join the third-year DDS class. In the third year you rotate through ten of the twelve ADA-recognized specialties in five-week blocks. In the fourth year you work in the Family Dentistry Clinic, run like a simulated office, and spend ten weeks in extramural programs outside the college.1

What Iowa focuses on, and what that means for you

The facts below come from the University of Iowa’s own pages. The tips under each one are our advice, based on those facts.

Residency

Preference for US residentsIowa gives preference to US citizens, permanent residents, and people with legal asylum or refugee status. You must show proof of residency, such as a passport, permanent resident card or visa, at the interview stage. Its CAAPID listing says a green card is not strictly required.25

Our adviceIf you live outside the US on a home passport, apply to Iowa as one school on a wider list, not your main hope.

Knowledge

Knowledge tested on the dayThe interview day includes a didactic test and a writing exam, not just a conversation. Iowa sets no minimum GPA but encourages applicants to show “a high level of knowledge and skill” throughout their training.3

Our adviceKeep your INBDE knowledge fresh after you pass. Practise writing a clear, structured answer in English in 30 minutes.

Hands

Calibration before clinicA bench test on interview day, then a summer course that evaluates and calibrates you before you enter the third year.13

Our adviceIowa does not publish the bench exercises. Train the common ones until they are consistent: Class II preparations and crown preparations.

Mission

Dentists for Iowa and beyondIowa’s mission is to educate dentists for Iowa and beyond through excellence in education, patient care and research. It points to its small class size and integration with the traditional DDS class from day one.5

Our adviceIn your essay and presentation, show you can blend into a small team of US students, and say why a smaller Midwest program suits you.

Your letters say a lot hereIowa wants one letter from a former faculty member and one from a teacher or mentor who can speak to your character, conduct and professional ability.2 Choose writers who know your clinical work well.

What Iowa asks for

Requirements in detail

Iowa reviews only complete applications that meet the deadline, and only documents in CAAPID. It does not read paper records or CVs unless it asks for them at interview.2

A passing INBDE, or NBDE Parts I and IIRequired to be considered. Iowa asks for official scores if you are offered an interview.2 The INBDE costs $1,325 for international candidates as of October 2026.8 Plan it with our INBDE and CAAPID timeline.
TOEFL iBT: 100, or 5.0 on the new scaleRequired for non-native English speakers, with no waiver. Only internet-based scores from tests taken after October 1, 2024, sent by ETS to CAAPID. Either scale is accepted through January 2028.2 Iowa’s FAQ page shows 5.5, so aim above the minimum. See our TOEFL course for dentists.3
ECE evaluationSend a detailed ECE evaluation to CAAPID. If you are offered an interview, your dental school sends your original academic record straight to the program.2 ECE’s course-by-course report costs $199.7
Three letters of evaluationOne from a former faculty member, one from a former teacher or mentor on your character, conduct and professional ability, and one from anyone who is not family. In English, on letterhead, signed, and less than two years old.2 See our letters guide.
FeesA $250 non-refundable Iowa application fee on top of CAAPID, and a $1,500 non-refundable interview fee if invited.23
At the interview stageYour National Board scores, a copy of your dental licence if you have one, proof of residency (passport, permanent resident card or visa), and a 2×2 colour photo with your name and CAAPID number on the back.2

How international dentists pay for it

Advanced Standing usually costs roughly $250,000 to $450,000 all-in, and Iowa sits in that range once you add living costs. Almost everyone finances it with loans, so do not let the number stop you.

Iowa says FAFSA aid is available to US citizens, the university offers no scholarships, and the program is full-time, so you cannot work while enrolled.3 If federal aid is not open to you, the common routes are private loans, co-signer loans with a US citizen or green-card holder, and a few international lenders that need no co-signer. Read is becoming a US dentist worth it.

Four places a year means almost every applicant needs a wider list.
