Ohio State Advanced Standing for International Dentists: The International Dentist Track (2026 Guide)
The Ohio State University College of Dentistry has launched an International Dentist Track: a 28-month Advanced Standing program that starts in the spring semester of the second year and ends with a DDS degree. You apply through ADEA CAAPID, and the first class of four starts on January 4, 2027.
How The Study Boards helps you get into Ohio State
- INBDE first: Ohio State needs a pass on the INBDE or NBDE Parts I and II. Our INBDE Premium Boards course gives you faculty-written Modules, Master Files, 35,000+ questions, the test series and nightly live tests at 9 PM New York time. Students who complete the course have a 99% first-attempt pass rate.
- Personalised to you: our courses are extremely personalised. Red lines and assignments are given to you on the go, the course learns from the way you study, and faculty assist you all the way.
- Hands for an in-person bench test: bench test preparation with Dr. Kaur covers the operative and fixed preparations Ohio State’s first-semester competency course is built around.
- English, file and interview: our TOEFL course, the CAAPID application program (personal statement, CV, letters, school list) and interview preparation with Dr. T cover the rest.
Ohio State International Dentist Track at a glance
From Ohio State’s program page, the university’s approved program proposal and the ADEA CAAPID listing, checked in October 2026.
What the 28 months look like
You complete the last seven terms of Ohio State’s DDS. The curriculum is the same as for the regular DDS students, plus one extra course for you: IDT Clinical Dentistry Competency, which reviews the operative and fixed prosthodontic materials and procedures you may not have used at home and tests you on them before you enter clinic. Ohio State accepts 71 credit hours from your home program and requires 107 more.3
What Ohio State focuses on, and what that means for you
The facts below come from Ohio State’s own pages and its approved program proposal. The tips under each one are our advice, based on those facts.
Dentists for Ohio’s shortage areasOhio State created the track partly for workforce development. Its proposal says the track may increase the number of dentists serving underserved communities, and notes that Ohio has 162 dental health professional shortage areas, including areas in Franklin County, where Columbus is.3
Our adviceIn your CAAPID essay and interview, say plainly whether you plan to practise in Ohio or in an underserved area, and back it up with service work you have already done.
Operative and fixed prosthodonticsYour first-semester competency course covers Class II amalgams, Class II and IV composites, three types of crown preparation, and anterior and posterior bridges. Practical exams make up 70% of the grade and the pass mark is 70%.3
Our adviceExpect the bench test to look for the same skills. Train crown preparations and Class II work until they are consistent before August.
Global perspectives in the classroomThe proposal names global engagement first: international dentists bring wide-ranging perspectives that help the DDS students learn to serve many kinds of patients.3
Our adviceShow what your training at home taught you that a US student would value, such as high patient volume or treating late-stage disease, and how you would share it in a team.
A brand-new, very small programThe first class has only four places, and admission is described as “selective and competitive”.1
Our adviceTreat Ohio State as one school on a wider list. Make every document perfect, because four seats leave no room for an incomplete file.
Requirements in detail
Ohio State lists eight items. The CAAPID listing adds rules on letters and citizenship.12
Selection steps and the application timeline
This is how the first cycle ran in 2026. Ohio State marked several dates as tentative.

Cost and financing
Ohio State bills the track in three parts. Tuition and fees include the non-resident surcharge and the IDT program fee. Tap a period; totals are our sums of Ohio State’s figures.1
Ohio State also lists an electric handpiece pass-through of $3,845 for two kits. All figures are estimates at 2026-27 fee amounts.
Before you are accepted, budget for the INBDE ($1,325), the CAAPID fee ($264 for your first program, $115 for each extra one), Ohio State’s supplemental fee, your English test and travel to Columbus.256 See what it costs to apply to US dental schools.
How international dentists pay for it
Advanced Standing usually costs roughly $250,000 to $450,000 all-in, and Ohio State’s estimate is above that range. Almost everyone finances it with loans, so do not let the number stop you.
Ohio State lists this track among its financial aid programs but gives no detail, and directs questions to [email protected].4 If you are a US citizen or green-card holder, federal loans may be open to you. Otherwise the common routes are private loans, co-signer loans with a US citizen or green-card holder, and a few international lenders that need no co-signer. Read is becoming a US dentist worth it.

Other routes if Ohio State is not the right fit
Four seats in the first class means most applicants need a wider list.
Advanced Standing elsewhereOther US schools run 2 to 3 year programs to a DDS or DMD, mostly through ADEA CAAPID, and many accept international applicants. Compare them in our full list of US dental schools and the Advanced Standing programs guide.
AEGD programsSome states give a limited licence after an AEGD; the rules vary by state. You apply through ADEA PASS. See AEGD programs for international dentists.
Residency directlySpecialty residencies through ADEA PASS. This is more competitive for internationally trained dentists. Read CAAPID or PASS.
TeachingSome dentists start in teaching and research roles at dental schools while they plan their next step.
If you are also weighing Canada, the AFK is the first exam on that route. Our NDEB AFK exam guide explains how it compares with the INBDE.
