University of Florida DMD Program for International Dentists: Not Advanced Standing (2026 Guide)

The University of Florida College of Dentistry admits internationally educated dentists to its 4-year DMD program: you join the first-year class and complete all four years, so this is not Advanced Standing. You apply through ADEA CAAPID, you need the DAT rather than the INBDE, only US citizens and green-card holders can apply, and up to 2 are accepted each year.13

Who this guide is for: Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi and Nepali dentists (BDS), and other internationally trained dentists aiming for a US DDS or DMD, who already hold US citizenship or a green card.

Deadline check: October 2026UF’s DMD page and the ADEA listing both give October 1, 2026 as the deadline for an August 2027 start, and DAT scores had to arrive by then. One UF comparison table lists November 1 for the 4-year DMD. If you missed October 1, email [email protected] today to ask whether the later date applies; otherwise plan for the next cycle, which opens in early spring.132

How The Study Boards helps you get into the University of Florida

  • INBDE: UF accepts the INBDE but does not require it, and it will not waive the DAT for it. The INBDE matters if UF is one of several schools on your list, because Advanced Standing programs and UF's own 2-year AEGD for internationally educated dentists require it. The Study Boards INBDE course gives you Modules and Master Files, 35,000+ questions, test series and nightly live tests at 9 PM New York time, with a 99% first-attempt pass rate for students who complete the course.
  • Personalised to you: our courses are extremely personalised. The course learns from the way you study, red lines and assignments are given to you on the go, and faculty assist you whenever you are stuck.
  • TOEFL: UF's minimum is 80 (4.0 on the new scale), but most programs on your list will want far more. Our TOEFL course for dentists aims higher than the minimum.
  • Your CAAPID file: our CAAPID application program builds your personal statement and CV with you, guides your letters, and helps you pick a realistic school list.
  • Bench test: UF lists no bench test, but most Advanced Standing schools set one. Our bench test preparation with Dr. Kaur keeps your other applications strong.
  • Interview: UF uses an in-person, open-file interview with 3 to 4 committee members. Interview preparation with Dr. T helps you tell your story honestly without memorised answers.

Why this is not Advanced StandingAdvanced Standing programs place you in the second or third year and finish in 2 to 3 years, with the INBDE as the key exam. At UF you join the first-year DMD class and progress with it through all four years, and the DAT is the admission test.1 You do earn a full DMD that lets you apply for licensure in any US state.2

What the school looks for

What the University of Florida focuses on

UF’s program is small and narrow. These points come from its own program, interview and mission pages.

Status

US citizens and green-card holdersYou must be a US citizen or permanent resident with proof of status; a temporary green card is not eligible.1

Florida

Florida residents firstFlorida residents have priority in admission to this program.1

DAT

Section-by-section DAT minimumsFor tests after March 1, 2025: Academic Average 330, Total Science 340, Biology 340, General and Organic Chemistry 350, Perceptual Ability 310, Quantitative Reasoning 340, Reading 300.1

Grades

A GPA on your evaluationYour ECE or WES report must include a GPA. UF suggests US science coursework to prepare for the DAT.1

Interview

Open-file and personalOne 20 to 30 minute open-file interview with 3 to 4 committee members, focused on your journey to dentistry. UF says do not memorise answers.5

Mission

Person-centred careUF’s mission is to advance the well-being of its communities through dental education, research, care and service.6

Our advice

So in your CAAPID essays and interview, show this

  • Your Florida ties, if you have them: where you live, work or volunteer. Residents get priority.
  • Why a full four-year DMD makes sense for you, rather than a shorter Advanced Standing route.
  • What you have learned from your experiences so far, as UF’s interview focuses on your journey and what you gained.
  • Honest, unscripted answers. Anything in your application is fair game in an open-file interview.
  • Community or patient-centred care you have given, in line with UF’s mission.

This is our advice, built on what the school publishes above. The school does not publish a scoring rubric.

What UF asks for

Requirements in detail

Applications are reviewed only when every requirement is met.1

US citizenship or a permanent green cardEmail proof (US passport, birth certificate, naturalisation certificate or green card) to UF when you apply, and bring the original if invited to interview.1

The DAT, with every section at the minimumOfficial DAT scores must reach UF by the deadline. If you tested before March 1, 2025, you need 15 in every section from one test date. Canadian DAT scores do not count. The program does not waive the DAT for NBDE or INBDE results.1

TOEFL iBT of 80, or 4.0Under two years old (for this cycle, July 1, 2025 or later), from one test date. MyBest scores and the TOEFL ITP are not accepted.1

ECE or WES with a GPAA course-by-course evaluation with a GPA, submitted to CAAPID.1 See WES or ECE: which do you need.

Three letters of evaluationSubmitted through CAAPID.13 Our letters guide explains how to ask.

Optional: INBDE, ADAT and US courseworkUF accepts NBDE or INBDE results and the ADAT, but requires neither. It recommends US courses in English, biology, chemistry, physics, microbiology and biochemistry to prepare for the DAT.1

Cost and financing

UF publishes a full budget for each DMD year. Tap a year. Each year adds a summer term after fall and spring.4

Fall and spring budget, resident / non-resident$78,842 / $107,970
Summer budget, all students$11,766.50
Year 1 total, resident / non-resident$90,609 / $119,737

Tuition and fees, resident / non-resident$41,720 / $70,848
Fall and spring budget, resident / non-resident$75,122 / $104,250
Summer budget, all students$11,643.50
Year 2 total, resident / non-resident$86,766 / $115,894

Tuition and fees, resident / non-resident$41,720 / $70,848

Summer budget, all students$12,514.50
Year 3 total, resident / non-resident$87,399 / $116,527

Tuition and fees, resident / non-resident$41,720 / $70,848
Licensure allowance$4,102
Year 4 total, resident / non-resident$78,600 / $107,728

Across four years at 2026-27 rates, that is about $343,370 for a Florida resident and about $459,880 for a non-resident (our sums of UF’s figures). Rates change each year.

UF’s budget includes books, instrument leasing, loupes, board fees, transport, off-campus living and personal costs. Before you apply, budget for the DAT, your TOEFL, the CAAPID fee ($264 for your first program, $115 for each extra one) and your credential report.47

How applicants pay for it

Because UF only admits US citizens and permanent residents to this program, you can apply for the same financial aid as other UF DMD students. UF’s cost of attendance is the most aid you can receive, and UF encourages conservative borrowing.4

If you also apply to Advanced Standing programs, those usually cost roughly $250,000 to $450,000 all-in, and almost everyone finances them with loans: federal loans for citizens and green-card holders, and private loans, co-signer loans or a few no-co-signer international lenders for others. Read is becoming a US dentist worth it for the full picture.

Other routes if UF’s 4-year DMD is not the right fit

Two places a year and a citizenship rule make UF a long shot for most international dentists. These routes are usually faster.

DDS/DMD

Advanced Standing elsewhereOther US schools run 2 to 3 year Advanced Standing programs to a DDS or DMD, mostly through ADEA CAAPID. Compare them in our full list of US dental schools and the Advanced Standing programs guide.

AEGD

AEGD programsSome states give a limited licence after an AEGD; the rules vary by state. You apply through ADEA PASS. UF itself runs a 2-year AEGD for internationally educated dentists in Hialeah, through ADEA PASS, for US citizens and green-card holders with the NBDE or INBDE; it leads to Florida licensure eligibility, at about $70,000 a year in tuition and fees.2 See AEGD programs for international dentists.

PASS

Residency directlySpecialty residencies through ADEA PASS. This is more competitive for internationally trained dentists. Read CAAPID or PASS to choose.

Teach

TeachingSome dentists start in teaching and research roles at dental schools while they plan their next step.

If you are also weighing Canada, the NDEB AFK route is the first exam on that path, and many of our students prepare for the INBDE and the AFK together.

Quick answers

Frequently asked questions

Can an Indian BDS graduate apply to the University of Florida’s Advanced Standing program?
UF does not run an Advanced Standing program. An Indian BDS graduate can apply to its 4-year DMD only if they are a US citizen or permanent green-card holder, with DAT scores at UF’s minimums, a TOEFL of 80 and an ECE or WES report with a GPA.
Do Pakistani dentists need the INBDE for the University of Florida?

Is UF’s international dentist program Advanced Standing?
No. You join the first-year DMD class and complete all four years. The degree lets you apply for licensure in any US state.
Can international students on a visa apply to UF’s DMD program?
No. Only US citizens and permanent green-card holders can apply; a temporary green card is not eligible.
How much does UF’s 4-year DMD cost?
At 2026-27 rates, tuition and fees are $41,720 a year for Florida residents and $70,848 for non-residents. With UF’s full budgets, four years come to about $343,370 for residents and $459,880 for non-residents.
