Who this guide is for: Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi and Nepali dentists with a BDS, and other internationally trained dentists aiming for a US DDS or DMD through the VCU International Dentist Program.

How The Study Boards helps you get into VCU

  • INBDE first: our INBDE Premium Boards course gives you 35,000+ questions, faculty-written Modules and Master Files, full test series and nightly live tests at 9 PM New York time. Students who complete the course have a 99% first-attempt pass rate. VCU wants the pass before you apply, so time your exam well ahead of January 29.
  • Built around you: at The Study Boards, in Dr. T’s words, our courses are extremely personalised. Red lines and assignments are given on the go, the course learns from the way you study, and faculty assist you at every step.
  • TOEFL: our TOEFL course for dentists is built for VCU’s preferred 4.5 overall with strong scores in every section.
  • CAAPID file: the Master the CAAPID Application program builds your essays and your school list with our faculty. For VCU, that means a statement and experience section that show your work in the US and at home, the two things its FAQ names.
  • Hands and interview: bench test preparation with Dr. Kaur and interview preparation with Dr. T. VCU lists a bench test and a mandatory interview for those invited.

What VCU focuses on

Built from VCU’s mission statement on CAAPID and the selection factors named in its IDP FAQ.

MissionEducation, research, patient care and community serviceVCU says it shares a commitment to all four, and has been Virginia’s only dental school for more than 120 years.5
SelectionScores, grades, statement and experienceVCU’s FAQ names exam scores (boards and TOEFL), previous grades (ECE and calculated GPA), your personal statement, and professional experience in the US and your home country as the most important elements for an interview.3
EnglishTOEFL taken seriouslyVCU explains that it is strict on TOEFL because research shows language skills predict success in international dental programs.3
US experienceA letter from a US dentistOne of the three letters should come from a dentist practising in the US who supervised or worked with you.2
CommunityExpansive community outreachIDP students take part in VCU’s community outreach and can join faculty research.5
InterviewMandatory if invitedVCU calls the interview very important; you must attend if invited.3
Our advice (not the school’s words): what to show in your CAAPID essays and interview

  • Show US experience: an observership, assisting job or volunteer clinic in the US gives you the US dentist letter VCU wants. See how to get an observership.
  • Lay out your professional experience at home with numbers and dates; VCU reads both sides.
  • Aim above the TOEFL minimum, especially in speaking. VCU openly links English to success.
  • Mention community service and any research in your statement, and say how you would use VCU’s outreach programs.
  • Prepare for the interview as a decisive step, not a formality.

A dental degree from outside the USThe IDP is open to any non-US trained dentist.5
An INBDE passPass the INBDE, or NBDE Parts I and II, before applying. The CAAPID listing adds that both must be passed by February 1, 2027.25 The INBDE costs $1,325 for internationally trained dentists ($890 plus a $435 processing fee) as of October 2026.8 Start with our INBDE Premium Boards course and the INBDE and CAAPID timeline.

A degree from an accredited US institution may waive it. Send scores to institution code 5570, department code 38.235 If you are short, see our TOEFL course for dentists.
ECE course-by-course evaluationSent to CAAPID. The CAAPID listing says WES is also accepted, but ECE is preferred.25 ECE charges $199.7 See WES or ECE: which do you need.
Three specific lettersOne from the dean or a faculty member of your dental school; one from a dentist practising in the US who supervised or worked with you; one from someone who supervised you professionally. Letters must be under two years old, on letterhead and signed.25 Our letters of recommendation guide shows how to brief them.
An $85 application feePaid directly to VCU after you submit CAAPID, using the last seven digits of your CAAPID ID. The ADAT is optional.2

How international dentists pay for it

Advanced Standing usually costs roughly $250,000 to $450,000 all-in. Ask VCU for its IDP figure to see where it sits. Almost everyone finances it with loans, so do not let the number stop you.

VCU says citizens and permanent residents may be eligible for federal aid, while other students are eligible only for private aid. Its financial aid page notes that not all private lenders lend to international students, but some do.34 Across the US, the common routes are private loans, co-signer loans with a US citizen or green-card holder, and a few international lenders that need no co-signer.

Other routes if VCU is not the right fit

About ten places a year is a small number, so most dentists apply to several programs.

DDS/DMD

Advanced Standing elsewhereOther US schools run 2 to 3 year programs to a DDS or DMD, mostly through ADEA CAAPID. Compare them in our full list of US dental schools, the Advanced Standing programs guide and our CAAPID shortlisting guide.
