Is the program running? Yes.As of October 2026 the IDP is active. UCSF’s ADEA CAAPID listing, updated 23 February 2026, shows a 2026 application window and a June 2027 start, and UCSF’s own pages carry the current requirements.27 If you missed June 2026, you are now planning for the cycle that opens in March 2027.

Three things that make UCSF different

The INBDE is optionalUCSF calls it “optional but strongly recommended”. You may apply before you sit it, but any score must reach CAAPID by the deadline.3
No bench testUCSF’s ADEA listing says no bench test, and none of UCSF’s IDP pages mention one.7
A blind interviewYour faculty interviewer does not see your written application. The interview is judged on four competencies alone.4

What UCSF asks for

UCSF IDP requirements in detail

UCSF has no minimum GPA, reviews every complete application in full and offers no individual counselling.13

Degree

A completed foreign dental degreeYou must already hold your dental degree. UCSF does not accept provisional degrees, and transfers between US international dentist programs are not allowed.3

Clinic

Two years of clinical workUCSF’s apply page says you must have two years of clinical work as a dentist within the past seven years. The UCSF catalog adds that candidates with three or more years of recent experience are encouraged to apply.26

INBDE

Optional, strongly recommendedPassing the INBDE (or NBDE Parts I and II) is not required, but UCSF strongly recommends it. Retakes do not count against you: UCSF says all attempts are reported and reviewed.3 Other programs, such as UCLA, require a pass before you even apply,14 so plan it with our INBDE Premium Boards plan.

TOEFL

Everyone sits the TOEFLMinimum 95 on the iBT, or 5 on the new score scale, taken within two years of the cycle opening. US citizens, green-card holders and US master’s graduates must all submit it. UCSF reviews only the overall score, and accepts the home edition and MyBest scores.237 Our TOEFL course for dentists follows the 2026 format.

ECE/WES

A course-by-course reportUpload an ECE or WES course-by-course evaluation and a copy of your transcripts through CAAPID. If you are invited to interview, official transcripts must go to UCSF directly from your school before the interview date. Notarised copies are refused.23 Not sure which to order? Read WES or ECE.

3 LORs

Exactly three letters, through CAAPIDOne from a clinician who supervised you, one from an academic at your home school (if you graduated more than five years ago, send two professional letters instead) and one of your choice. No dean’s letter is needed, and UCSF will not take a fourth letter. Each needs an electronic signature and full contact details.23 See our guide to CAAPID letters.

6 Qs

UCSF’s supplemental questionsSix questions in the UCSF section of CAAPID, each up to 1,500 characters. They ask how you prepared for US dentistry, a mistake you made in practice, something unique about you, your direct and indirect restorative experience and materials, and your main dental experiences of the past three years.2

CV + fee

A current CV and the $200 feeUpload your CV through CAAPID and pay the non-refundable $200 UCSF processing fee through UCSF’s online payment system. Cheques are not accepted.2

The rule that catches peopleUCSF accepts nothing before the cycle opens and no updates after the deadline: no new CV, no extra letters, no late scores. A CAAPID application still incomplete at the deadline is not reviewed.3 Book your TOEFL, and your INBDE if you plan to sit it, so the results land weeks before mid-June.

How UCSF chooses

Selection steps: application, interview, offer

CAAPID applicationSubmit through ADEA CAAPID with your evaluation, letters, CV and UCSF’s six answers. CAAPID charges $264 for your first program and $115 for each additional one in 2026-27.8 New to the portal? Use our CAAPID walkthrough.
UCSF fee and scoresPay the $200 UCSF fee online. Your TOEFL, and your INBDE if you have one, must reach CAAPID on or before the deadline. Scores mailed to UCSF are not accepted.23
Review and interview invitationThe committee weighs academic achievement, motivation for dentistry and your potential.1 In the latest class profile, 84 of 857 applicants (9.8%) were interviewed. Send your official transcripts to UCSF before the interview date.12
Writing exercise and faculty interviewFirst a required live video session with a 30-minute writing exercise and a Q&A with staff and students. Then a one-on-one interview with a faculty member who has not read your application. You are judged on motivation, self-awareness, problem-solving and critical thinking, and collaboration, teamwork and leadership.4 An interview is required for admission but does not guarantee it.3
Offer and checksUCSF emails you as your status changes. Anyone offered provisional admission completes a criminal background check, and international students must show funds for at least the first year’s program fees to get a student visa.312
No bench test at UCSF, but keep your hands readyUCSF does not set a bench test, yet its supplemental questions ask about your restorative experience, and your first IDP summer includes a 6-unit course in removable partial dentures, crown and bridge, and operative dentistry.25 Other schools may. Check them in bench test exercises by school and start with what the dental bench test is.

  • UCSF accepts nothing before this date, and strongly recommends applying early.23

The hard deadline

  • 15 June 2026 on ADEA; 16 June, 11:59 p.m. EST on UCSF’s page. Work to the earlier date.27
  • Application, UCSF answers, $200 fee, TOEFL and any INBDE result all in. Late files are not reviewed.3

The money

Cost and financing

The IDP program fee is the same for California residents and non-residents.3 These are UCSF’s 2026-27 cost-of-attendance estimates for each IDP year.10

Summer fees$2,715
Program fee and other fees$86,319
Cost of living (12 months)$38,736
Dental kit$20,949
Year 1 cost of attendance$148,719

Program fee and other fees$86,319
Cost of living (12 months)$38,736
Books and supplies$772
Dental kit$7,428
Externship ($400 to $2,800 by site)$2,800
Year 2 cost of attendance$136,055

Program fee and other fees$86,319
Cost of living (12 months)$38,736
Books and supplies$1,416
Dental kit$1,554
Externship ($400 to $2,800 by site)$2,800
Year 3 cost of attendance$130,825

$415,599all three years at 2026-27 rates
$221,604program fees alone ($73,868 x 3)
$464to apply: CAAPID $264 + UCSF $200

Year totals are UCSF’s figures. “Program fee and other fees” includes the $73,868 program fee and student health insurance. The three-year total is our addition of UCSF’s yearly totals; later years are charged at that year’s rates, which may be higher.910

How international students pay for itUCSF offers no scholarships to IDP students. Students who are not US citizens or permanent residents can use only private educational loans, and UCSF says you may choose any lender that offers them, not just the ones on its list. US citizens and green-card holders can apply for federal loans through the FAFSA.311 For an F-1 visa you must show funds for at least the first year’s program fees.3

This is a big number, but it is a normal one. An Advanced Standing degree in the US costs roughly $250,000 to $450,000 all-in, and almost everyone finances it with loans: private loans, co-signer loans with a US citizen or green-card holder, and a few international lenders that need no co-signer. You repay it over years of practice, not up front. Read is becoming a US dentist worth it for the full picture.

Quick answers

UCSF IDP FAQ

Is the INBDE required for the UCSF IDP?
No. UCSF calls passing the INBDE (or NBDE Parts I and II) optional but strongly recommended. You can apply before you sit it, but any official score must reach CAAPID by the deadline, and all attempts are reported.3 Other programs, such as UCLA, require a pass before you apply, so sit it early.14
What is the UCSF dentistry acceptance rate for international dentists?
In the class profile on UCSF’s IDP page, 857 dentists applied, 84 were interviewed (9.8%) and 20 were accepted: 2.3% of applicants and 23.8% of interviewees. Accepted students had a dental school GPA of 3.29 to 4.0 (average 3.78) and TOEFL scores of 95 to 117 (average 101.2).1
Does UCSF have a bench test for international dentists?
No. UCSF’s ADEA CAAPID listing marks “Bench Test: No”, and its IDP pages describe only the video interview and a 30-minute writing exercise.47
Does UCSF accept WES, and does it accept IELTS?
UCSF accepts both WES and ECE course-by-course reports. For English, its pages list only the TOEFL.37
Is the UCSF IDP still a two-year program?
No. From the 2023-24 admissions cycle, UCSF offers only the three-year track. ADEA’s listing says the extra year adds clinical experience, research and community externship rotations.7
Can I apply directly to UCSF, or reapply if I am not accepted?
All applications go through ADEA CAAPID; there is no direct route. You may reapply in a later cycle. UCSF keeps your supplemental documents for two cycles, but you must submit a new CAAPID application.3
