DDS in the USA for Nepali Dentists: The 2026 Guide From BDS to a US Licence

Nepali dentists reach US practice the same way most internationally trained dentists do: pass the US exams, apply through ADEA CAAPID, complete an Advanced Standing program (IDP) and get licensed. AEGD, residency and teaching routes exist too. Pick where you are today to see your next three moves.

Your starting point

Your Nepali BDS and the US system

In Nepal the BDS is four to four and a half years of study, depending on the university, followed by a one-year compulsory rotating internship. Dentists register with the Nepal Medical Council.

The key factMost US states license only graduates of programs accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation. So instead of converting your BDS, most dentists earn a US DDS or DMD through an Advanced Standing program, then sit a licensing exam.

Your options

Four routes for Nepali dentists after the US boards

A BDS alone does not give you a US licence in most states. But once you clear the INBDE, Advanced Standing is not your only option.

IDP

Advanced Standing (IDP)Advanced Standing programs, usually called IDP (International Dentist Program), place you partway through a US dental school. In two to three years you earn a DDS or DMD, the degree every state accepts for a full licence. You apply through ADEA CAAPID.

AEGD

AEGD residencyAdvanced Education in General Dentistry is a one to two year residency. In some states, completing an AEGD can lead to a limited licence to practise; the rules differ by state, so check with the dental board of the state you want. You apply through ADEA PASS. See AEGD programs that accept international dentists.

PASS

Specialty residencyYou can also apply directly to residency programs, such as orthodontics, periodontics or prosthodontics, through ADEA PASS. This route is more competitive, and only some programs accept dentists from schools outside the US. See every residency type.

Teach

TeachingDental schools sometimes hire internationally trained dentists as teaching faculty. You apply directly to the schools that are looking for teachers, and teaching experience helps. This depends completely on whether a school has an opening.

Which route is right for you?Advanced Standing is the most common route, because the DDS or DMD leads to a full licence. AEGD and residency suit dentists who want a shorter program or a specialty. Not sure? Message our Admin Team with Dr. T and Dr. Kaur on WhatsApp and we will help you choose.

What it costs

$75 to $150Each school’s supplemental fee
$250K to $450KAdvanced Standing (IDP) program, all-in

TOEFL fees are set by ETS for Nepal. Program costs vary by school and city; plan for roughly $250,000 to $450,000 all-in. Read is it actually worth it before you decide.

Don’t let the cost scare youAn Advanced Standing program costs roughly $250,000 to $450,000 all-in, including living costs. Almost every international dentist pays for it with a loan, not savings. By the time you get your admission, you can arrange the funding: private education loans, loans with a co-signer (usually a US citizen or green card holder), and a few lenders for international students that need no co-signer. You pay the loan back once you are working as a dentist. It is a simple process, so don’t let the number stop you from starting.

Quick answers

Frequently asked questions

Can I practise in the US with a BDS from Nepal?
Not in most states, which require a CODA-accredited degree. A few states run limited alternative pathways that change often; confirm with the state dental board. Once you clear the INBDE, Advanced Standing, AEGD, specialty residency and teaching are all possible routes; see all four routes.
Is a DDS different from a DMD?
No. They are the same US dental degree with two names.
Do I need research to get in?
Research is great to have, but it is not required for an invite. Your exams and application documents come first.
How long does the whole journey take?
The program is two to three years. Before that, plan time for the INBDE, the TOEFL, the ECE report and one application cycle. Passing the INBDE quickly is what shortens the timeline most.
