DDS in the USA for Mexican Dentists: From Cirujano Dentista to a US Dental Degree (2026)

A Mexican Cirujano Dentista degree does not let you practise in most US states on its own. Like other internationally trained dentists, most Mexican dentists earn a US DDS or DMD through a two to three year Advanced Standing program (IDP), then pass a licensing exam. AEGD, residency and teaching are other routes. Here is the full route, with the steps that are different for Spanish-speaking applicants.

Your starting point

Your Mexican degree in a US application

The Licenciatura de Cirujano Dentista usually takes four to four and a half years, plus a mandatory year of servicio social before you graduate. Your professional licence in Mexico is the cédula profesional.

1

Not a direct revalidationMost US states license only graduates of programs accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA), so your degree is not simply recognised.

2

Earn the US degreeAn Advanced Standing program places you partway through a US dental school. You graduate with a DDS or DMD.

3

Keep your full recordTranscripts, your degree (título), proof of servicio social and your cédula profesional all support your application.

Your options

Four routes for Mexican dentists after the US boards

A Cirujano Dentista degree alone does not give you a US licence in most states. But once you clear the INBDE, Advanced Standing is not your only option.

IDP

Advanced Standing (IDP)Advanced Standing programs, usually called IDP (International Dentist Program), place you partway through a US dental school. In two to three years you earn a DDS or DMD, the degree every state accepts for a full licence. You apply through ADEA CAAPID.

AEGD

AEGD residencyAdvanced Education in General Dentistry is a one to two year residency. In some states, completing an AEGD can lead to a limited licence to practise; the rules differ by state, so check with the dental board of the state you want. You apply through ADEA PASS. See AEGD programs that accept international dentists.

PASS

Specialty residencyYou can also apply directly to residency programs, such as orthodontics, periodontics or prosthodontics, through ADEA PASS. This route is more competitive, and only some programs accept dentists from schools outside the US. See every residency type.

Teach

TeachingDental schools sometimes hire internationally trained dentists as teaching faculty. You apply directly to the schools that are looking for teachers, and teaching experience helps. This depends completely on whether a school has an opening.

Which route is right for you?Advanced Standing is the most common route, because the DDS or DMD leads to a full licence. AEGD and residency suit dentists who want a shorter program or a specialty. Not sure? Message our Admin Team with Dr. T and Dr. Kaur on WhatsApp and we will help you choose.

The difference for Spanish speakers

English is part of every step

For Mexican dentists, English is often the real deciding factor, more than the dentistry.

Plan the money early

What it costs in 2026

Item 2026 cost
ECE course-by-course evaluation $199, plus translations if needed
INBDE, international candidate $1,325
TOEFL iBT Set by ETS for Mexico; check ets.org
ADEA CAAPID, first program / each extra $264 / $115
SEVIS fee + US visa application fee $350 + $185
Advanced Standing (IDP) program, all-in About $250,000 to $450,000, usually financed with a loan
ADEX Dental Examination $2,995 + facility fee
Don’t let the cost scare youAn Advanced Standing program costs roughly $250,000 to $450,000 all-in, including living costs. Almost every international dentist pays for it with a loan, not savings. By the time you get your admission, you can arrange the funding: private education loans, loans with a co-signer (usually a US citizen or green card holder), and a few lenders for international students that need no co-signer. You pay the loan back once you are working as a dentist. It is a simple process, so don’t let the number stop you from starting.

Quick answers

Frequently asked questions

Can I revalidate my Mexican dental degree in the US?
Not directly in most states, which require a CODA-accredited degree. That is why the Advanced Standing route exists. A few states run limited alternative pathways that change often; confirm with the state dental board. Once you clear the INBDE, Advanced Standing, AEGD, specialty residency and teaching are all possible routes; see all four routes.
Does my servicio social count?
It is part of your Mexican training record. Include it in your documents and application; how each school weighs it is up to that school.
Do I need to live in the US to start?
No. You can get your DENTPIN, order your ECE evaluation, prepare for the INBDE and TOEFL, and apply through CAAPID from Mexico. You travel for bench tests and interviews once invited.
Is a DDS the same as a DMD?
Yes. Two names for the same US dental degree.
