DDS in the USA for Pakistani Dentists: The 2026 Roadmap From BDS to DDS/DMD

A Pakistani BDS will not convert into a US degree, but it gets you into one. Most Pakistani dentists earn a DDS or DMD through a two to three year Advanced Standing program (IDP) at a US dental school, then pass a licensing exam. AEGD, residency and teaching are other routes. Here are the four phases, in order, with the real 2026 fees.

Your Pakistani BDS in a US application

The BDS in Pakistan is a four-year degree followed by a one-year house job, regulated by the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PM&DC).

Check your batchPM&DC announced a move to a five-year BDS and later reversed it. Whichever structure applies to you, US programs will see your full record, so make sure your transcripts and house job certificate tell the complete story.

Year-wise transcriptsYour university must send official transcripts for the credential evaluation. Request them early.

Your options

Four routes for Pakistani dentists after the US boards

A BDS alone does not give you a US licence in most states. But once you clear the INBDE, Advanced Standing is not your only option.

IDP

Advanced Standing (IDP)Advanced Standing programs, usually called IDP (International Dentist Program), place you partway through a US dental school. In two to three years you earn a DDS or DMD, the degree every state accepts for a full licence. You apply through ADEA CAAPID.

AEGD

AEGD residencyAdvanced Education in General Dentistry is a one to two year residency. In some states, completing an AEGD can lead to a limited licence to practise; the rules differ by state, so check with the dental board of the state you want. You apply through ADEA PASS. See AEGD programs that accept international dentists.

PASS

Specialty residencyYou can also apply directly to residency programs, such as orthodontics, periodontics or prosthodontics, through ADEA PASS. This route is more competitive, and only some programs accept dentists from schools outside the US. See every residency type.

Teach

TeachingDental schools sometimes hire internationally trained dentists as teaching faculty. You apply directly to the schools that are looking for teachers, and teaching experience helps. This depends completely on whether a school has an opening.

Which route is right for you?Advanced Standing is the most common route, because the DDS or DMD leads to a full licence. AEGD and residency suit dentists who want a shorter program or a specialty. Not sure? Message our Admin Team with Dr. T and Dr. Kaur on WhatsApp and we will help you choose.

The four phases from BDS to DDS

Each phase unlocks the next. Most delays come from starting a phase before the one before it is finished.

Phase 1 · PrepareDENTPIN and credential evaluationCreate your free DENTPIN with the ADA, using your passport name exactly. Then order a course-by-course evaluation of your BDS from Educational Credential Evaluators ($199), which ADEA CAAPID requires.
Phase 2 · QualifyINBDE and TOEFLPass the INBDE ($890 exam fee plus $435 international processing, $1,325 in total), which most Advanced Standing programs require. See our full INBDE preparation plan. Take the TOEFL iBT; since 21 January 2026 it is scored on a 1 to 6 scale, and each school sets its own minimum.
Phase 3 · ApplyCAAPID, bench test and interviewApply through ADEA CAAPID ($264 for the first program, $115 for each extra). The 2026-27 cycle opened on 5 March 2026. Shortlisted applicants sit a hands-on bench test and interviews.
Phase 4 · Study and licenseProgram, visa and licenceGet an F-1 student visa, complete the two to three year program and graduate with a DDS or DMD. Then pass a licensing exam, usually the ADEX Dental Examination, and apply to a state dental board.

Budget for the application stage

These fees come before tuition. Applying to six programs is a common plan.

ECE course-by-course evaluation$199
INBDE (international candidate)$1,325
ADEA CAAPID, 6 programs ($264 + 5 × $115)$839
SEVIS fee (after acceptance)$350
US visa application fee$185
Total before TOEFL, travel and tuition$2,898

TOEFL fees are set by ETS for Pakistan, and school supplemental fees run about $75 to $150 each. Tuition is the big number: plan for roughly $250,000 to $450,000 all-in, depending on the school and the city. See our honest cost and timeline breakdown.

Don’t let the cost scare youAn Advanced Standing program costs roughly $250,000 to $450,000 all-in, including living costs. Almost every international dentist pays for it with a loan, not savings. By the time you get your admission, you can arrange the funding: private education loans, loans with a co-signer (usually a US citizen or green card holder), and a few lenders for international students that need no co-signer. You pay the loan back once you are working as a dentist. It is a simple process, so don’t let the number stop you from starting.

After graduation: getting licensed

2

Quick answers

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to be in the US to start?
No. You can get your DENTPIN, order your ECE evaluation, prepare for the INBDE and TOEFL, and submit your CAAPID application from Pakistan. The INBDE is taken at Prometric test centers, so check which locations are open to you when you register. You travel for bench tests and interviews once invited.
Can I practise in the US with my BDS?
Not in most states. Most require a degree from a program accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation, which the Advanced Standing program gives you. A few states run limited alternative pathways that change often; confirm directly with the state dental board. Once you clear the INBDE, Advanced Standing, AEGD, specialty residency and teaching are all possible routes; see all four routes.
Is a DDS the same as a DMD?
Yes. Both are the same US dental degree. The name depends only on the school.
I have an FCPS or MDS. Can I skip the program?
Usually not. The requirement is an accredited primary dental degree, which a postgraduate qualification does not replace. It does make your application stronger.
Which exam should I start with?
The INBDE. It sits on the critical path for almost every program, and the rest of your timeline depends on when you pass it.
