DDS in the USA After BDS: The 2026 Step-by-Step Guide for Indian Dentists

Your BDS does not convert into a US degree, but it is the ticket into one. Most Indian dentists earn a DDS or DMD through a two to three year Advanced Standing program (IDP), then sit a licensing exam. AEGD, residency and teaching are other routes. Here is every step, in order, with the real 2026 fees.

The short answer

You cannot practise in most US states on a BDS alone. Once you clear the US boards you have several routes, and the most common is earning a US dental degree.

1

BDS does not convertMost US states require a degree from a program accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA). An Indian BDS is a real dental degree, but it sits outside that system.

2

Advanced Standing (IDP) is the main routeUS dental schools run programs for internationally trained dentists. You join partway through, study two to three years, and graduate with a DDS or DMD.

3

DDS and DMD are the sameDoctor of Dental Surgery and Doctor of Dental Medicine are one qualification with two names. The school decides which letters you get.

Your BDS in a US applicationAn Indian BDS is five years: four years of study plus a one-year compulsory rotatory internship, under the Dental Council of India. Keep your year-wise mark sheets, degree certificate, internship completion certificate and Dental Council registration ready. You will need them for the credential evaluation and the application.
Your options

Four routes for Indian dentists after the US boards

A BDS alone does not give you a US licence in most states. But once you clear the INBDE, Advanced Standing is not your only option.

IDP

Advanced Standing (IDP)Advanced Standing programs, usually called IDP (International Dentist Program), place you partway through a US dental school. In two to three years you earn a DDS or DMD, the degree every state accepts for a full licence. You apply through ADEA CAAPID.

AEGD

AEGD residencyAdvanced Education in General Dentistry is a one to two year residency. In some states, completing an AEGD can lead to a limited licence to practise; the rules differ by state, so check with the dental board of the state you want. You apply through ADEA PASS. See AEGD programs that accept international dentists.

PASS

Specialty residencyYou can also apply directly to residency programs, such as orthodontics, periodontics or prosthodontics, through ADEA PASS. This route is more competitive, and only some programs accept dentists from schools outside the US. See every residency type.

Teach

TeachingDental schools sometimes hire internationally trained dentists as teaching faculty. You apply directly to the schools that are looking for teachers, and teaching experience helps. This depends completely on whether a school has an opening.

Which route is right for you?Advanced Standing is the most common route, because the DDS or DMD leads to a full licence. AEGD and residency suit dentists who want a shorter program or a specialty. Not sure? Message our Admin Team with Dr. T and Dr. Kaur on WhatsApp and we will help you choose.
The roadmap

How to start a DDS in the USA: 8 steps

The steps overlap, but this is the order that avoids wasted months.

Get your DENTPINA free eight-digit ID from the ADA that you need before registering for the INBDE or applying. Make sure the name matches your passport exactly. See our DENTPIN guide.
Order your ECE evaluationADEA CAAPID requires a course-by-course evaluation of your BDS ($199) from Educational Credential Evaluators. Ask your university to send official transcripts early; this step often takes longer than people expect.
Pass the INBDEThe Integrated National Board Dental Examination is required by most Advanced Standing programs. International candidates pay $890 plus a $435 processing fee, $1,325 in total. See our full INBDE preparation plan.
Take the TOEFLMost programs require it. Since 21 January 2026 the TOEFL iBT reports scores on a new 1 to 6 scale, and each school sets its own minimum, so check every program on your list.
Apply through ADEA CAAPIDOne central application for most programs. The 2026-27 cycle opened on 5 March 2026. The fee is $264 for the first program and $115 for each additional one.
Bench test and interviewShortlisted applicants are invited to a hands-on bench test and interviews. This is where many strong applicants lose their seat, so practise both.
Student visa and programAccepted students apply for an F-1 visa (SEVIS fee $350, visa application fee $185) and complete the two to three year program to earn a DDS or DMD.
Get licensedMost graduates take the ADEX Dental Examination: the computer-based DLOSCE plus hands-on clinical exams ($2,995), then apply to the dental board of the state where they want to practise.

Where are you now? Your next three moves

Pick the option that fits you best.

Choose an option above to see your next steps.
Best time to start

1. Create your DENTPIN now and check the spelling against your passport.

2. Start INBDE preparation alongside your internship, a few hours a week.

3. Collect your mark sheets and ask how your university sends official transcripts to ECE.

Exams first

1. Order your ECE course-by-course evaluation.

2. Build an INBDE study plan and book a test date to give yourself a deadline.

3. Plan the TOEFL for after the INBDE, so the scores are fresh when you apply.

Application stage

1. Take the TOEFL if you have not already.

2. Shortlist programs and check each one’s TOEFL minimum and requirements.

3. Start your personal statement and line up your letters of recommendation before the cycle opens.

Make every part count

1. Submit early in the cycle; many programs review applications as they arrive.

2. Get your personal statement and CV reviewed by someone who knows CAAPID.

3. Start bench test practice now, before the invitations arrive.

Want the full breakdown, including instrument kits and living costs? Read what it actually costs to apply to US dental schools and is it actually worth it.

Don’t let the cost scare youAn Advanced Standing program costs roughly $250,000 to $450,000 all-in, including living costs. Almost every international dentist pays for it with a loan, not savings. By the time you get your admission, you can arrange the funding: private education loans, loans with a co-signer (usually a US citizen or green card holder), and a few lenders for international students that need no co-signer. You pay the loan back once you are working as a dentist. It is a simple process, so don’t let the number stop you from starting.

Save yourself a cycle

6 mistakes that cost Indian dentists a year

1

Name mismatchesA DENTPIN or exam record that does not match your passport exactly can get you turned away on exam day.

2

Late transcriptsWaiting for official transcripts can stall the ECE report and miss early application review.

3

Applying before the INBDEMost programs want the INBDE passed. An application without it is usually wasted money.

4

Too few programsSeats are limited and competition is heavy. Applying to only one or two schools is a big risk.

5

A generic statementA personal statement that could belong to anyone does not get you invited.

6

Ignoring the bench testMany applicants prepare for exams for a year and for the bench test for a week. Do not be one of them.

Quick answers

Frequently asked questions

Can I practise in the USA with only a BDS?
Not in most states. Most US states require a dental degree from a CODA-accredited program, which is why the Advanced Standing route exists. A small number of states run their own limited pathways with conditions attached; these change often, so confirm current rules directly with that state’s dental board. Once you clear the INBDE, Advanced Standing, AEGD, specialty residency and teaching are all possible routes; see all four routes.
Is a DDS better than a DMD?
No. They are the same degree with different names. Graduates take the same exams, get the same licences and practise the same way.
Does an MDS shorten the route?
Usually not. An MDS is a specialty degree, and the requirement is an accredited primary dental degree. An MDS does strengthen your application, through more clinical years and often research.
How long does the whole journey take?
The program itself is two to three years. Before that, plan time for the INBDE, the TOEFL, the ECE report and one application cycle. How long that takes depends mostly on how quickly you pass the INBDE.
Do I need research publications to get in?
Research is great to have, but it is not required for an invite. Your exam results and your application documents come first.
