INBDE Study Materials 2026: What to Use and What to Skip

The best INBDE study material is a short stack, not a shelf: the free official JCNDE documents, then one complete system that teaches, tests and simulates the exam. At The Study Boards, that system is our faculty-written Modules, our Master Files, the Master and Grand Test Series with full explanations, and two timed 2-day simulations. Skip recalled questions, unsourced PDFs, books written only for the old NBDE Part I or Part II, and answers nobody qualified has checked.

How The Study Boards helps you with study materials

One set of materials, in order, written by our faculty

You do not need to collect resources. The Study Boards INBDE course gives you everything in one place:

  • Modules: one faculty-written Module for every subject, so you learn the concept first.
  • Master Files: only what is clinically relevant, so you revise what the exam actually asks.
  • Test series: 35,000+ focused questions, daily tasks, a nightly live test at 9 PM New York time, the Master Test Series and 8-hour Grand Tests.
  • Personal guidance: the course is extremely personalised. Red lines and assignments are given to you on the go, the course learns from the way you study, and our faculty are there to assist you.

See how it fits together in the INBDE course blueprint.

The official JCNDE materials

The Joint Commission on National Dental Examinations (JCNDE) posts its preparation files on one page. As of October 2026 they are free to download, with no account.1

The page also has an acronyms list, a day-of-test checklist and fact sheets. Prometric separately offers a 30-minute Test Drive with a generic sample test (not INBDE content); it lists the price on its own site.2 Find everything on the JCNDE INBDE preparation page.

What the JCNDE itself says about study materialsIt recommends textbooks and lecture notes as primary sources, and it “does not endorse or recommend any specific texts or other teaching aids (e.g., review courses).”2 So any “JCNDE-approved course” claim is false.

Where the marks are

The test specifications split every question into three clinical sections. Oral Health Management alone is 42% of the exam.2

Oral Health Management42%
Diagnosis and Treatment Planning36%
Practice and Profession22%

The same questions are also tagged to the 10 Foundation Knowledge areas, each worth 7% to 12%, with pharmacology and microbiology at 11% each.2 So study basic science through a clinical lens, because that is how it is tested.

Day Sections Questions Time
Day 1 Sections 1 to 3: standalone. Section 4: cases 300 standalone + 60 case questions 8 h 15 min with optional tutorial and breaks
Day 2 Sections 5 and 6: cases 140 case questions 4 h 15 min

Each section is 105 minutes. Day 2 must be within 7 days of Day 1, at the same test centre.2 Full exam details are in our complete INBDE exam guide.

INBDE study material by subject: our Modules and Master Files

The JCNDE recommends learning from teaching material, not from questions alone. In our course, that teaching material is one faculty-written Module per subject, backed by a Master File that keeps you on what is clinically relevant. Here is what each group of subjects covers.

How to use a Module for the INBDEStudy the Module first, then test yourself straight away; after that, let your test results send you back to the one section you missed. Whatever you study from must be current: the exam now follows the 2017 periodontal classification, the 2021 AHA antibiotic prophylaxis statement, the 2020 IADT trauma guidelines and the 2020 ASA classification, and it no longer asks darkroom or film-processing questions.4 If an old note conflicts with these, ask our faculty.
Anatomy, histology and the basic sciences FK 1 to 7
  • Anatomy: head and neck anatomy, nerves and spaces of infection.
  • Dental anatomy: tooth morphology, occlusion, development, histology and eruption.
  • Biochemistry and physiology: only the clinically linked topics, labelled so you know what is not tested.
  • Microbiology and immunology: host defense and oral infections.
Pathology, oral medicine and radiology FK 4, 6
  • General pathology: the disease processes behind your patients’ medical histories.
  • Oral pathology: lesions, and when a lesion needs a biopsy or referral.
  • Oral radiology: interpretation, radiation safety and selection criteria.
Pharmacology, medically complex patients and emergencies FK 8
  • Pharmacology: drugs, doses and interactions that matter in the dental chair, including local anesthesia.
  • Medically complex patients: how to modify treatment for each condition, one of the most useful topics for the case sections.
  • Medical emergencies: recognition and first steps in the dental office, alongside the ADA’s clinical practice guidelines.
Restorative, materials and prosthodontics
  • Operative dentistry: caries, preparations and restoration choice.
  • Dental materials (FK 3): properties and selection, taught through clinical use.
  • Prosthodontics: fixed, removable partial and complete dentures.
Periodontics, endodontics and oral surgery
  • Periodontics: with the 2017 staging and grading learned cold.
  • Endodontics: pulpal and apical diagnosis and emergencies.
  • Oral surgery: extractions, complications and infections.
Orthodontics and pediatric dentistry
  • Orthodontics: growth, diagnosis and space management.
  • Pediatric dentistry: behavior, trauma and pulp therapy in children.
Ethics, public health and research FK 9, 10 and Practice and Profession

For quick revision, use the Master File for each subject: it keeps only what you would need in a real case. How Master Files work.

Where most of your hours go

Test series, simulations and what an INBDE online course should give you

The INBDE tests whether you can apply knowledge to a patient: 200 of the 500 questions sit inside case sets.2 Most of your hours belong in exam-style questions. These are the six things our test series are built to give you.

1

Patient-box casesQuestions that start with a patient box, like the real case sections.

2

Every option explainedWhy the answer is right and why each wrong option is wrong.

3

Current and sourcedAnswers that follow the guidelines the exam uses today, with references you can check.

4

Subject tests and mixed testsSubject blocks while you learn, then mixed tests like the exam.

5

Full 2-day simulationsAt least two timed runs in the real structure: six 105-minute sections over two days.

6

A human answers your doubtsWhen an explanation confuses you, a US-licensed dentist answers, not AI.

How to run a simulation properlySit both days at your real start times, take only the scheduled breaks, and deep-review by question type the next day. Space simulations two to three weeks apart. Dr. Kaur explains each rule in how to take INBDE simulation exams.

Our guide on how to choose INBDE resources as an international dentist boils it down to three things: one concept source, one set of explained questions and full practice exams. The Study Boards course gives you all three, so you can stop shopping and start studying.

Quick answers

Frequently asked questions

What is the best study material for the INBDE?
A short stack: the free JCNDE documents, then one complete system. In The Study Boards course, that is our Modules for concepts, Master Files for clinically relevant revision, the test series with full explanations, and two full 2-day simulations. The JCNDE does not endorse any review course, so judge a course by what it gives you.
Are the official JCNDE practice questions enough to pass?
No. The sample PDF has 39 questions, and the JCNDE says they are best used to learn the item formats. It does not guarantee they are accurate or current, and it cautions candidates not to limit their preparation to them.
Do I need to buy textbooks for the INBDE?
No. Our Modules teach every subject and our Master Files keep you on what is clinically relevant. If you still have your dental school notes, they are fine for an occasional look, as long as they follow current guidelines.
Can I use my old NBDE Part I and Part II books?
Only with care. Those exams ended in 2020 and 2022, and their books may teach outdated classifications. Check every guideline-based fact against a current source.
Is an INBDE online course worth it?
Yes, if it replaces your pile of resources: teaching material in order, a question bank with real explanations, full 2-day simulations and dentists who answer your doubts. No, if it only adds more questions.
How do I revise quickly before the exam?
Use the Master Files for fast revision, keep up with the red lines and assignments you are given, and sit the nightly live test. That keeps every subject fresh without opening anything new in the last weeks.
