WesternU International Dentist Program (IDP): Requirements, Casper, Bench Test and Cost

Western University of Health Sciences College of Dental Medicine in Pomona, California, runs the International Dentist Program (IDP): about 26 to 27 months from February to May two years later, ending with a DMD degree. You apply through ADEA CAAPID and a separate WesternU secondary application, with a passed INBDE, TOEFL iBT 88 (4.5 on the new scale) and a Casper test.123

Admission is rolling, so seats fill as the cycle goes on. Qualified applicants are invited to an on-campus interview that includes dexterity testing.23

Where the cycle stands (October 2026)The 2026 deadline (20 July 2026) has passed, and WesternU expects to interview in September and October, with offers usually from November to January for a February 2027 start.23 WesternU has already posted the next cycle: applications open in early March 2027 and close on 20 July 2027. Because admission is rolling, aim to submit in March.24

Who this guide is for: Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi and Nepali dentists (BDS), and other internationally trained dentists aiming for a US DDS or DMD, who are considering WesternU’s IDP in Southern California.

The Study Boards

How The Study Boards helps you get into WesternU’s IDP

  • INBDE first: WesternU will not consider an incomplete file. Our INBDE course gives you 35,000+ questions, faculty-made Modules and Master Files, the test series and nightly live tests at 9 PM New York time. 99% of students who complete the course pass on their first attempt.
  • Built around you: the courses are extremely personalised. Red lines and assignments are given on the go, the course learns from the way you study, and faculty assist you.
  • TOEFL: WesternU needs 88 (4.5) and will not take tests from before 4 March 2025 for the 2027 cycle. Our TOEFL course for dentists gets you there in time.
  • Application, Casper, hands and interview: the CAAPID application program builds your essays and school list, Dr. T prepares you for Casper and the on-campus interview, and bench test prep with Dr. Kaur readies you for dexterity testing.

How the program runs

IDP starts with a 10-week intensive course that calibrates you to the first two years of WesternU’s curriculum: preclinical and integrated biomedical sciences, treatment of medically complex patients, behavioural science, interprofessional education and clinical service learning. You then join the regular students in clinic and take the same courses for the next two years.1

What WesternU focuses on

WesternU publishes a “competitive candidate profile” for IDP. It reads more like a character list than a score list.6

1

Community and service learningWesternU wants students who have “demonstrated an interest and involvement in the community” and who take part in community-based education and service learning projects.6

2

Character, tested by CasperIntegrity, compassion, respect, flexibility and adaptability are on the list. Every applicant also takes Casper, an online situational judgment test of about 65 to 85 minutes.26

3

Communication in English“Excellent verbal and written communication skills”, including English writing, speaking and comprehension.6

4

Knowing WesternUThe profile asks for “a good understanding of both the dental profession and WesternU”. WesternU runs advising sessions and campus visits for prospective IDP students.16

5

Teamwork across health professionsYou learn “with an integrated team of health professionals”, and the opening course includes interprofessional education and medically complex patients.1

6

Hand skills on campusDexterity testing is part of the on-campus interview. WesternU does not publish what you will prepare.2

Our advice: how to use this in your essays and interviewLead with service: dental camps, community clinics, outreach and teaching. Show you have worked with medical teams or treated medically complex patients. Name something specific about WesternU, ideally from an advising session or visit. Prepare for Casper as a test of judgment and empathy, not knowledge. WesternU does not describe what kind of applicant has done well beyond its profile, so these are our suggestions.

What WesternU asks for

Requirements in detail

Applications are not considered until every requirement is met. Everything below is due by 20 July 2027 for the next cycle.23

INBDE

INBDE passThe INBDE, or NBDE Parts I and II, with official results through CAAPID. For international candidates the INBDE costs $890 plus a $435 processing fee, $1,325 in total.29

TOEFL

TOEFL iBT 88 or 4.5Scores are valid for two years; for the 2027 cycle, tests before 4 March 2025 are not accepted. No MyBest; the Home Edition is fine. A waiver applies to US permanent or temporary residents with six US college English units at C or better.2

WES/ECE

Course-by-course evaluationFrom WES or ECE only, with grades and the level of each course, sent straight to CAAPID. WesternU says this can take months, so do it first. ECE charges $199.28

2 LORs

Two letters from dentistsOn your character, conduct and professional ability; at least one from a full-time dental school faculty member. Letters from outside the US may be up to two years old.2

Casper

Casper testRegister on Acuity Insights’ Casper site, release results to WesternU, and have the score arrive by the deadline. One attempt per cycle.2

$200

Secondary applicationThe WesternU secondary and its $200 non-refundable fee, on top of CAAPID’s $264 for the first program and $115 for each extra one. Certificates you list need official proof.27

ADAT optional; visa rulesADAT scores are considered but not required, and not sending one does not hurt you. F-1 applicants must show one year of funding before WesternU issues an I-20. H-4 holders can study full time without changing to F-1.23

WesternU’s 2026-27 budget

What WesternU IDP costs, and how people pay for it

WesternU publishes a three-column budget for IDP. All figures are estimates and subject to change.5

2026-27 estimates First year Second year Third year
Tuition $40,320 $161,282 $129,062
Fees and health insurance $9,497 $18,892 $19,367
Tuition and fees $49,817 $180,174 $148,429
Books, supplies, equipment, computer $8,568 $2,938 $6,332
Living, personal and transport $50,688 $50,688 $50,688
Estimated cost of attendance $109,073 $233,800 $205,449

That adds up to $378,420 in tuition and fees and about $548,000 with WesternU’s living budget, before loan fees. For context, WesternU reports average debt of $325,694 among its 2025 IDP graduates who borrowed from it.5

How people actually pay: loansBecoming a US dentist through Advanced Standing usually costs somewhere between $250,000 and $450,000 all-in, and WesternU’s full budget sits above that range, so plan carefully. Almost nobody pays in cash; most students finance it with loans and repay them from a US dentist’s income. At WesternU, federal aid is open only to US citizens and permanent residents, and there are no IDP-specific scholarships.3 International students usually use private loans, often with a US citizen or green-card co-signer, and a few international lenders need no co-signer. Ask WesternU’s financial aid office which lenders it works with.

Weigh cost against income: is becoming a US dentist worth it?

Other routes if WesternU is not the right fit

Twenty seats and a high budget mean you should apply wider. Passing the INBDE opens four routes.

1

Advanced Standing at another schoolTwo to three years to a DDS or DMD through ADEA CAAPID. Compare programs in our Advanced Standing programs guide and full list of US dental schools, and shortlist with the CAAPID directory method.

2

AEGD through ADEA PASSSome states give a limited licence after an AEGD; rules vary by state. See AEGD programs for international dentists.

3

A residency through PASSMore competitive for international applicants. Read CAAPID or PASS: how to pick.

4

TeachingSome international dentists join a US dental school in a faculty or academic role. Rules vary by school and state.

If you are also weighing Canada, the AFK route through the NDEB is the place to start.
