  • INBDE first: our INBDE Premium Boards course gives you 35,000+ questions, faculty-written Modules and Master Files, full test series and nightly live tests at 9 PM New York time. • TOEFL: our TOEFL course for dentists is built for scores like Meharry’s 100, where every section must reach 25.
  • CAAPID file: the Master the CAAPID Application program builds your essays and your school list with our faculty. For Meharry, that means essays that show real service to people who struggle to get care.
  • Hands and interview: bench test preparation with Dr. Kaur and interview preparation with Dr. T. Meharry has no admission bench test, but its six-week module assesses your preclinical skills straight away.

What the program looks like

You start with a six-week, individualized training and assessment module in comprehensive preclinical dentistry and its biomedical applications. Once you pass it, you complete the two-year clinical program. In the final year you take the Final Clinical Competency Examination (FCCE) course, the same course every traditional DDS student takes.1

What Meharry focuses on

Built from Meharry’s mission, the International Track page and its CAAPID requirements.

MissionService to underserved communitiesMeharry is one of the oldest historically Black academic health sciences centers in the US. Its motto is “Worship of God Through Service to Mankind”, and it describes Meharrians as dedicated to serving underserved communities.5
PatientsCare for families and low-income patientsMeharry runs dental care on campus and a growing number of clinics in Middle Tennessee. Its Adopt-A-Grandparent program has given free dental care to low-income seniors for nearly 30 years.5
EnglishThe highest TOEFL bar of these schoolsTOEFL iBT 100, with no section below 25, and no waiver for anyone.2
BoardsA recent INBDE pass, before the deadlineYou need the pass in hand by November 1, from the last five years. A minimum of 75 or a “Pass” result is required.2
LettersSomeone who taught you, and ideally your deanOne letter must come from a former teacher who saw you in a clinical or educational setting. Meharry prefers one from your dean.2
CompetenceThe same final exam as US studentsInternational Track students take the same FCCE course as the traditional track, so Meharry judges you against the same standard.1
Our advice (not the school’s words): what to show in your CAAPID essays and interview

  • Make service the spine of your personal statement. Name the camps, rural clinics or free-care days you worked, with numbers and dates.
  • Explain why you want to treat patients who find it hard to get care, and connect that to Meharry’s mission in your own words.
  • Ask a teacher who supervised you in clinic for one letter, and ask your dean for another. Brief both on Meharry’s focus.
  • Treat the TOEFL as a gate: aim well above 25 in speaking and writing, not just a 100 total.
  • If invited to speak with the school, show that you are ready for clinical work from week seven. The six-week module moves fast.

Requirements in detail

Meharry’s rules are short but strict. A 99 on the TOEFL, or a 24 in one section, means your file is not considered.

ECE or WES evaluationMeharry accepts either evaluator through CAAPID.2 ECE charges $199 for the course-by-course report.7 See WES or ECE: which do you need.
Three letters in EnglishSent through CAAPID, on letterhead and signed. One must come from a former teacher who worked with you in a clinical or educational setting and can speak to your character, conduct and professional ability. Meharry prefers one from your dean.2 Our letters of recommendation guide shows how to brief them.
Meharry supplemental application and feeThe CAAPID listing says Meharry requires both. The amount is not shown on the listing, so check the instructions Meharry sends you.2
Not a US citizen or green-card holder? You can still apply; the CAAPID listing does not require US citizenship. Meharry’s financial aid office suggests you work out how you will fund the program before you apply.24

How international dentists pay for it

Advanced Standing usually costs roughly $250,000 to $450,000 all-in. Meharry sits in the upper half of that range. Almost everyone finances it with loans, so do not let the number stop you.

Meharry says only US citizens and permanent residents can receive federal Title IV aid, and it encourages international students to research other funding, including private loans. It suggests you confirm your funding before you apply.4 Across the US, the common routes are private loans, co-signer loans with a US citizen or green-card holder, and a few international lenders that need no co-signer.
