What AEGD Training Involves
An Advanced Education in General Dentistry program is a year of advanced training in general dentistry, usually based in a dental school or a community health centre. You treat more complex cases than you did in dental school, under closer supervision, and leave with a certificate.
AEGD is not a specialty, so it does not lead to specialty board certification. Some programs offer an optional second year. Applications go through ADEA PASS, and many programs take part in Phase I of the Postdoctoral Dental Match.

23 of the 152 AEGD programs listed in ADEA PASS say they will consider graduates of non-CODA dental schools. Of those, 9 sponsor a visa, 7 accept you if you arrange your own visa, and 7 only enrol US or Canadian citizens and permanent residents. The other 129 programs expect a DDS or DMD from a CODA-accredited school, which for most internationally trained dentists means finishing a US advanced standing program first.
Step by Step
How to Get In
- Get your DENTPIN, then your ECE evaluation. Most programs want a course-by-course evaluation of your dental degree from international applicants, and the name on it must match your DENTPIN.
- Pass the INBDE. 64 of the 152 programs list the INBDE or the older NBDE among their required tests.
- Prove your English. 15 of the 152 programs list the TOEFL, and it is usually required for applicants whose first language is not English.
- Apply through ADEA PASS with your personal statement, CV and letters of evaluation, and pay any program supplemental fee.
- Register for the Postdoctoral Dental Match. AEGD is part of Phase I; 59 of the 152 programs participate.
- Interview, then sort out your visa if you are not a US citizen or permanent resident.

No. Both are general dentistry residencies, usually one year long, but an AEGD is typically based in a dental school or community clinic and focuses on advanced clinical dentistry, while a GPR is hospital-based and leans toward medically complex patients, emergencies and operating-room care.
