INBDE Test Day: The Night Before, the Morning Of, and at Prometric

Arrive at your Prometric center at least 30 minutes early with two original, unexpired IDs, and the name on them must match your DENTPIN application exactly. The INBDE runs over two days, 12 hours 30 minutes in total, and Day 2 must fall within 7 days of Day 1 at the same test center. Here is everything else, step by step, from the official rules.

How The Study Boards helps you with test day

Rehearse the two days before the real two days

The Study Boards INBDE course includes two full 2-day simulation exams and 8-hour Grand Tests, so you practise the INBDE’s real 105-minute sections and scheduled breaks before test day. The nightly live test at 9 PM New York time trains you to perform at a fixed hour, and we train you in timed focus blocks until a full section feels normal. In the final weeks, red lines and assignments are given to you on the go so your last revision targets your own weak areas, and our faculty are there to assist you right up to exam week.

How the two INBDE days are laid out

The INBDE has 500 questions in six sections of 105 minutes each. Day 1 is long. Day 2 is half a day.1 At The Study Boards, this layout is the first thing we ask students to memorise, because every break and meal plan hangs on it.

Day 2 within 7 daysThe two days do not have to be back to back, but Day 2 must fall within 7 days of Day 1 at the same center. Miss that and you retest at your own expense.1

0

Loading time is freeThe timer pauses while a question loads. A slow screen does not eat into your 105 minutes.1

All

Answer every questionThe JCNDE does not penalise guessing. Some questions are unscored trial items, and they look exactly like scored ones, so treat every question as if it counts.1

Scheduled vs unscheduled breaks

Scheduled breakOne of the four optional breaks in the table above. Use it to eat, drink, use the restroom and take medicine from your locker. Tell the Test Center Administrator before you open your locker, including for medicine.3

Unscheduled breakAny break at any other time. You may NOT open your locker, touch your phone, notes or belongings, eat, drink or leave the building. Staff report every unscheduled break, and breaking these rules can void your results.1

Every exit means security againEach time you leave the testing room you sign out. When you come back you go through the full security check again, show your ID and sign in.3 Budget two or three minutes of every scheduled break for this.

The rule that sends people home

ID rules and name matching

If the name on your application does not match your IDs exactly, you will not test, and you lose both your appointment and your application fee.1

1

Primary IDGovernment issued, with your photo, name and signature. Examples: passport, passport card or driver’s licence. Every ID except a passport must be in English.1

2

Secondary IDShows your name and signature. Examples: a debit card, credit card or library card.1

Bring the original, unexpired cardAn expired ID is refused even with proof that a new one is on the way. Photocopies and phone photos are refused too.1
Compare letter by letterOpen your DENTPIN profile and put your passport next to it. Check spelling, the order of your names and every middle name. For a middle name, the JCNDE accepts the full middle name or the middle initial.1
Fix a mismatch earlyUse “Update Detail” in your DENTPIN account and upload proof such as a marriage certificate or court document. Do it at least 10 business days before your test date. Last-minute changes may not be approved.1
Common trap for international dentistsTransliterated names are spelled in many ways. “Mohammed” on DENTPIN and “Muhammad” on your passport is a mismatch. Your passport is the safest primary ID, so make DENTPIN match the passport, not your degree certificate.

What happens at Prometric

On arrivalID checkStaff check your two IDs against your appointment.1
BiometricsPhoto, fingerprint or palm vein scanYou must consent before you can test. Prometric keeps this to confirm it is you after breaks and at any retest.1
LockerStore everythingBag, phone, food, wallet, watch, jacket. Storage space is limited.1
SecurityWand, pockets, sleeves, glassesA metal-detector wand scan, pockets turned inside out, sleeves above the wrists, trouser legs above the ankles. Glasses and hair accessories are inspected.13
At your seatTwo note boards and two fine-tip markersNo graph lines. Ask for a fresh board when one is full. They are collected and wiped at the end of each day.1
StartConfidentiality statement, then the tutorialAccepting the confidentiality statement starts the exam, and from that moment it counts as an attempt.1 The 15-minute tutorial is optional.
During testingYou are watched and recordedStaff walk the room, and the session is video and audio recorded. Staff cannot answer questions about content, scoring or policy.1

Do not do a “brain dump” before the exam startsThe JCNDE bans writing on the note boards before the test begins and during scheduled breaks.1 Wait until your first real question is on the screen before you write any formulas or tables.
Nervous about a center you have never seen?Prometric sells a 30-minute Test Drive that walks you through check-in and a short generic sample test at a real center.6 Driving to the center on a weekend before your exam is free and does most of the same job, and our 2-day simulations take care of the timing and breaks.

From the JCNDE’s prohibited items list.1

Earplugs, medical items and religious objectsPrometric publishes a list of pre-approved items, including foam earplugs, inhalers and glucose tablets, but it also says your test sponsor’s list may be different.5 The JCNDE’s own list bans personal earplugs not approved by Prometric and bans religious or spiritual objects.1 Where the two lists differ, the JCNDE’s rules apply.3 Ask for the center’s headphones instead. If you need food, medicine or a religious object at your desk, request it in advance. Our guide to INBDE testing accommodations shows how.

Plan B

If something goes wrong

Late

Over 30 minutes lateIf you arrive more than 30 minutes after your start time and are refused, you lose the full testing fee.1

Ill

Sudden illness or a death in the familyEmail [email protected] with proof, such as a doctor’s note from that day, within 5 business days.1

Tech

Computer or room problemTell staff at once and do not carry on until it is fixed. If it keeps happening, stop testing and email [email protected] within 5 business days. A retest within 30 days may be offered.1

Do not keep testing through a serious problem and complain after your result arrives. The JCNDE says candidates who do that are unlikely to get the remedy they want.1

Rescheduling fees, as of October 2026

Notice before your appointment Fee
30 or more business days $50
5 to 29 business days $70
1 to 4 business days $150

Weekends are not business days. You must reschedule or cancel through Prometric by the business day before your test and at least 24 hours ahead; the local center cannot do it for you. A no-show loses all fees.1 Full steps: Prometric booking and rescheduling for the INBDE.

Never share what you sawPosting or discussing remembered questions, even in a WhatsApp group, breaks the rules of conduct. Results can be voided years later, and other exam programs can be affected too.1

After a pass: your routes in the US

Advanced Standing (IDP)2 to 3 years to a US DDS or DMD, applied for through ADEA CAAPID.
AEGDThrough ADEA PASS. Some states give a limited licence after it; rules vary by state.
ResidencyApply directly through PASS. More competitive.
TeachingFaculty roles at US dental schools.

Advanced Standing costs roughly $250,000 to $450,000 all-in. Almost everyone finances it with loans: private loans, loans with a co-signer who is a US citizen or green-card holder, or one of the few international lenders that need no co-signer. It is a well-trodden path. See your roadmap after the INBDE.

Three test-day rules people get wrong

Your DENTPIN says “Mohammed” and your passport says “Muhammad”. Will you be allowed to test?
NoNames must match exactly. Fix it with Update Detail at least 10 business days before your test date.
Can you write a quick formula sheet on your note board during the tutorial?
Don’tWriting on note boards before the test begins is banned. Wait for your first real question.
You need the restroom halfway through Section 2. Can you grab water from your locker on the way?
NoThat is an unscheduled break: no locker, phone, food or drink, and staff will report it.

How early should I arrive for the INBDE?
At least 30 minutes before your appointment, which is Prometric’s advice. If you arrive more than 30 minutes late and are refused, you lose the full testing fee.
Is the INBDE taken on two consecutive days?
Not necessarily. Day 2 must be within 7 days of Day 1 and at the same Prometric center.
Can I eat during the INBDE?
Only during scheduled breaks, from your locker. You cannot eat or drink during an unscheduled break or in the testing room, unless the JCNDE approved it as an accommodation.

No. The center gives you two note boards and two fine-tip markers. You hand them back at the end of each day.
How does The Study Boards help you get ready for INBDE test day?
Students in The Study Boards INBDE course sit two full 2-day simulation exams with the real section lengths and breaks, so the real test day feels familiar. Questions are answered by US-licensed dentists, not AI.
