Course Structure – Updated for Current TOEFL iBT

The program aligns with the updated TOEFL iBT format (from January 21, 2026) and covers all four sections with their newest question types as described by ETS.

• Reading: Academic passages with traditional comprehension items plus new sentence‑level construction tasks such as Build a Sentence and other fill‑in‑the‑blanks style questions that focus on grammar and word order.

The updated TOEFL iBT Writing section now focuses on two high‑utility academic tasks: Write an Email and Write for an Academic Discussion. Each task is scored on a 0–5 rubric, and together they contribute to your overall Writing band on the new 1–6 scale used on score reports from January 2026.

Task 1: Write an Email

You write a clear, appropriately polite email in response to a realistic university‑style situation (for example, asking a professor for clarification, responding to a housing office, or explaining a problem to an administrator).

The email is evaluated on a 0–5 scale using an ETS‑style rubric that looks at:

• Communicative purpose and elaboration: how fully and effectively you respond to all parts of the situation.
• Organization and social conventions: logical structure, paragraphing, politeness, and appropriate register for email.
• Language control: sentence variety, accurate grammar and word forms, and precise, natural vocabulary.
• Overall clarity: how easy it is for a reader to understand your message without confusion.

Task 2: Write for an Academic Discussion

You see a short online classroom discussion with a question from the instructor and sample posts from other students. Your job is to add your own post that responds directly to the question and engages with the ideas in the discussion.

This task is also scored from 0–5. High‑scoring responses:

• Give relevant, well‑developed reasons, examples, or details that clearly support your opinion.
• Use a variety of sentence structures and appropriate academic vocabulary.
• Stay organized, with ideas that are easy to follow from start to finish.
• Contain only occasional, non‑distracting grammar or word‑choice errors that do not affect meaning.

How Your Writing Is Scored in the Course

For each task, mentors assign a 0–5 score using rubrics adapted from official ETS guides for Write an Email and Write for an Academic Discussion.

Your two task scores are combined into a course Writing score and also converted to the 1–6 band scale so you can see how your performance aligns with the score bands that appear on the new TOEFL iBT score report.

In addition to numeric scores, you receive written comments on elaboration, organization, sentence structure, vocabulary, and correctness so you always know your next steps for improvement.

Speaking is often the most stressful part of TOEFL, but with the right templates and consistent mentor feedback, it becomes predictable and manageable. From January 21, 2026, ETS has replaced the old 4 speaking tasks with a Listen and Repeat section and an Interview section, and this course is fully aligned with that change.

The New Speaking Tasks You’ll Master (2026)

• Listen and Repeat – 10 questions (no prep time): You hear a short sentence and repeat it exactly. There are 10 questions, each with a 10‑second response window. These questions train your pronunciation, stress, rhythm, and ability to reproduce natural English quickly and accurately.
• Interview – 4 sets (2 questions per set): You complete 4 interview sets. Each set has 2 questions, and you give one combined 45‑second response for the pair of questions (for example, Set 1 has 2 questions and you respond once for 45 seconds). Interview prompts are familiar, everyday topics where you show fluency, organization, and natural speech.

Speaking Scoring in This Course

Total questions: 14 (10 Listen and Repeat + 4 Interview sets).

Total raw marks: 70 points – Listen and Repeat: 10 questions × 5 points each = 50 marks; Interview: 4 sets × 5 points each per set = 20 marks.

Each response is graded on a 0–5 band using an ETS‑style analytic rubric (delivery, language use, and topic development adapted to the new task types). The raw total out of 70 is converted to a scaled score out of 30 using our internal conversion table so that practice scores mirror official reports as closely as possible.

How Mentoring Works
